After much research and thought I went with the G-DEC 3 Thirty. I was comparing the Line6 Spider Jam vs. the G-DEC 3. It was a tough decision but the lower price and built-in computer interface/software bundle ended up being the deciding factors. I'm having a blast and hopefully will actually learn to play better. Good jamming folks! :D

Well Done Speegman,

I too bought the new GEC 3 Thirty, I can honestly tell you have made the right decision. I bought the Line 6 Spider Jam and sold it to buy the new GDEC 3 Thirty. The GDEC 3 Thirty craps all over the Spider Jam, Fenders Tone is far superior whereas the Spider Jam sounds tinny in comparison. It DOES NOT hold a candle to the GDEC 3 Thirty.

You have DEFINATELY made the right choice!

Good choice. I owned a Spider Jam for a while, and it's nothing compared to the G-DEC 3. It just doesn't have the tone or the features.

I am a current owner of the original G Dec, which I have been happy with. The G Dec 3 30 sounds like a logical replacement for my G Dec, especially because it has the USB interface. But I was recently introduced to the Line 6 Spider Jam and now I am not sure which one to go with (until I hear them both). My local dealer still hasn't received any new units.

Each amp has its fans and detractors and they all pretty much say the same things about the one they like/hate. Can those of you have had the Spider Jam and returned it to get a G Dec tell me what was the main reason you like the Fender better?

They have very similar features, but not being able to connect to a PC/Mac is a big drawback.

On the Spider Jam it's not easy to see what all of the EQ and FX settings are. With the G-DEC 3 and Fender Fuse you can quickly and easily see all of your settings and change them in realtime.

With Fender Fuse it's really easy to store and capture as many presets as you want, and they are easier to manage.

Fuse also has a growing community adding new presets and backing tracks every day.

The Spider Jam sounds good, but you can't go wrong with the Fender tone.

Just got mine yesterday. Stayed up way too late last night. Lots of fun and it sounds pretty darned good. A quantum leap over the previous generation of G-DEC, IMO. It's painful to admit, but for a guy like me who has no band and simply plays in the basement at night with a sleeping family upstairs an amp like this probably meets my needs better than a larger tube amp would. Not ready to sell my hand wired 18 watt just yet, but the thought briefly crossed my mind.

Are there any patches on the new amps that give you an acoustic sim tone, or even better, a nylon string acoustic sound?

The amp comes with several acoustic presets, but I don't recall any for a nylon string sound.

Tehuti,

I did a lot of research on both the Spider Jam and the G-DEC 3 before finally purchasing the G-DEC 3. I’m listing the various features from memory so I apologize for any errors or mistakes. Both the Spider Jam and the G-DEC 3 sound good. The primary benefits of the Spider Jam are multiple inputs which allow instruments other than guitars to be attached, greater speaker output and access to the amps full functionality without requiring connectivity to a computer. There are Right/left line outs as well. From a user perspective the Spider Jam operates like a traditional amp which has looping capabilities. A Mic input is also included so you can record your voice as well. Additional backing tracks can be added via an SD card slot. There is no direct connectivity to a computer and thus no Internet.

The benefits of the G-DEC 3 are the following. You have two guitar inputs and on the 30 watt model you also have right/left line outs as well. Direct connectivity to a computer and the Internet are built in and the unit comes with some very cool software. There are two advantages of the computer/Internet connectivity: 1) it allows extremely convenient down-loading of additional backing tracks and firmware updates and 2) the computer based Fuse application allows full editing of all effects and amp parameters. And there is no denying that the visual display within Fuse provides a more natural sound shaping experience – a stomp box looks just like a real one as do the modulation and delay effects. On the Spider Jam you can only control the overall intensity of the effects. The other major feature is the ability to move data to and from the G-DEC 3 as a USB device. The SD card data limitations on the Spider Jam are 2GB versus 32GB for the G-DEC 3. Also for the G-DEC 3 you can store presets and configuration data for the entire amp on the SD card. This allows you to back up the entire amp with data to a card for safe keeping. With the ability to store so much data on the SD card, such as presets and backing tracks, the G-DEC 3 can function very well as a stand-alone unit. The ability to connect to the Internet and share data will over time give you more “bang” for the buck and should allow updates to the unit that can take advantage of newer technology. Line6 has stated formally that it will not be developing any updates for the Spider Jam. With that said, I believe you will find the G-DEC 3 to be a better choice for the future. If Line6 had an update to the Spider Jam that would provide the Spider IV amp functionality and provide connectivity to the Internet the decision would be really hard. However, with the current direction of Line6 regarding the Spider Jam the G-DEC 3 is really the best way to go.
Everyone that I've shown the amp to has just gone nuts - whether they play guitar or not.
I hope this long response helps.
Happy Jamming!
