I've had my new GDEC 3 30 for about a week now. I really like it- but it's quite a change from my comfortable (to use) G Dec 30. Would have been cool if it had kept the older midi ports to allow for midi streaming from Jammer but I guess the focus is on new technology and I'm cool with that.

Anyway here's my question:

I've used FUSE to send a couple midi files to the amp hard drive. First file is good. I have set it up as a band track for a preset and all is well. Second file seems to have a glitch. When I try to play it using Quick Access - it plays a few measures and then seems to lock up the amp. Amp still plays the guitar preset, but the menu will no longer scroll. How do I delete this file from the amp hard drive?

I've removed it from the media library on fuse and though maybe FUSE would remove it from the amp but it did not. I'd really like to get this file off the hard drive to any potential of playing it by accident and locking up the amp...

Thanks in advance.
Randy

Hey Randy,

Glad to hear that I am not the only one having trouble with MIDI files on the new 3 Thirty. I have about 200 really nice MIDI backing tracks that I use in my six G-DEC 30s - two each for rock, country and old-time. I use them for live performance in a wide variety of venues and learned the hard way that even with a fine amp like the old G-DEC 30, you'd better have a back-up amp along for the gig.

Anyway, the MIDI files - I used Jammer to export about 50 of my best MIDI backers and loaded them on a brand new SD card in the new amp. Once that was done, I used Quick Access to locate them and try them out - not good! The first MIDI track started to play then turned into audio jibberish and shortly thereafter locked the amp up tight, just exactly like a frozen computer (which, of course, it essentially is).

I rebooted the amp, used QA to locate the MIDI tracks and tried again - this time no sound at all but for one loud squelch and everything froze again. I tried a few more times and then gave up as it appears that neither Type 0 or Type 1 MIDI files are going to be worth the effort.

As far as getting the files off the amp, you have to hook the amp via USB to your computer, flip the amp on and let it boot and let the computer find it. Then - hold in your Exit button on the amp until it opens your Utilities menu, then use the left soft button to get to the USB access point (just a couple of pushes or so) and then hit enter with either of the two center soft buttons. If you're using Windows, you should get the "what do you want me to do" box and you can choose Open Folder to View Contents. When that folder opens you should have three folders, one of which should be Audio and one of which should be MIDI.

Your loaded MIDI files should be in the MIDI box if the amp did the right thing and you should be able to delete them just like any other file on your computer.

In the future, I would not load anything directly onto the amp - there's only 7.7 MB of free space anyway - get an SD card into the slot and put all your stuff on the SD card - safer and easier in the long run.

Hope this helps,

Dennis

Dennis, Thanks so much for the guidance. I would have never figured that out on my own.. :) It worked like a charm. For what it is worth... If I try to load and play a midi file just as I have downloaded them from the internet, they seem to play fine. Once I have used Jammer to save a .cmp file to a midi, it does not seem to work. Maybe something in the way Jammer exported a project file to a midi. Not sure yet, but I'm still tinkering.. :)

Wow 6 G-DECs and using them in live performances... I'm very impressed. Do you happen to have any tracks online? I'd love to hear some of your music..

Thanks againman,
Rock on..

So, just for kicks and to keep tinkering with MIDI files and the GDEC 3, I had a MIDI file that I had downloaded from the internet and worked on in Cakewalk Sonar (which came with my Boss ME-25). In Sonar, I had already worked on the project and changed the key, added lyrics etc... So just for grins, I exported that project to both a midi type 0 and a midi type 1 file and dropped them onto the drive via USB folder as CRGuitarMan showed me how to do earlier in this thread.

Sonar asked if I wanted to send MIDI sysex and opted for "NO". Both files worked flawlessly on the G-Dec 30. Maybe I wasn't selecting the correct MIDI save options in Jammer... Not sure yet..

I haven't installed Ableton Live yet or Amplitube yet. Heck there's only so much my brain can learn at once.. lol

Hey Randy,

Maybe you're right about Jammer not exporting MIDIs set up the right way, though you can't beat Jammer when it comes to loading files onto the old G-DEC 30. I'll have to experiment some, but I have put so much time and effort into my .cmp versions that I can't leave them behind.

Knowing that the new 3 Thirty amps were on their way (I pre-ordered in January) I spent hours and hours loading my files into the old G-DEC 30 and then recording them from the G-DEC thru Cubase and saving them as .wav files. I especially like setting up the MIDI files in stereo, panning things left and right, and then recording them in stereo. So far all of them that I have recorded as .wav files are sounding very good on the new amps.

You can hear some of my G-DEC live performance stuff by visiting my website: www.cr-rockhounds.com and checking out links and samples there. All of our demo audio samples were recorded using carefully crafted MIDI files for backing tracks. They came out very nicely.

Lots to do and lots to learn!

Dennis

Can midi be streamed over the USB from Jammer or Any other midi sequencer ? I like to sync my sequencer to the external sound source that the files are going to be played on for mixing and choosing instruments and such.

Hey Mistercaster,

The Fender G-DEC 3 cannot stream MIDI over USB. The MIDI implementation on the amp is mostly for playback of MIDI files to jam along with. It sounds like what you are looking for is a General MIDI sound module such as a Roland Sound Canvas or similar device. Both have GM implementation but they are designed to do different things.

Thanks loren. Sorry that The G-Dec 3 lacks this feature. I do want to jam along with my midi files. I also want them to sound good. This is best accomplished by mixing and setting the instrument sounds on the sound source they will be played back on. So to be clear I want to stream midi to the G-Dec. I can't quite tell from the wording of your response, "The Fender G-DEC 3 cannot stream MIDI over USB", if you assume I want to stream MIDI from the G-DEC 3.

Thanks I am familiar with the Roland. It a very cool multifunction device. An audio interface, sound model and a backing track machine that plays midis, mp3 and wav. Supports playlist. It also has transport controls for looping, rewind and such. It was second on my list. I was wanting a one handed pick up and go solution. My alternative will most likely be the Roland through the rca inputs on my Crate PowerBlock and a Boss ME-25 through the front input or line in.
