Is it possible to change the key the G-Dec 3 plays back at as you could on the previous G-Dec, if so, how? If not, WHY NOT? This could be very disappointing...

I pasted the info below from some other posts. I think they address your question.

The new Band Tracks are all MP3 or WAV audio files. The new Fender G-DEC 3 gives you the ability to timestretch (50 to 150%) and/or pitchshift (+/- 5 steps) the audio on the fly.

While, technically you can't change the key like you can when using a MIDI sequence, the time stretch function allows you to change the pitch of what you're playing without changing the tempo. That, basically, will change the key of the song.

For Midi files:

In order to change the key of a MIDI sequence you must first assign it to a preset. To do this, scroll to the preset you want and press the Band soft-key. To add a MIDI file, select MIDI in the "Band Type" screen then press the right arrow soft-key to select the MIDI file you want in the File screen. Continue to advance through the Band menu using the the right arrow soft-key to change the song tempo, Transpose settings, Drum Solo, and others settings.

To select an audio Band Track instead of a MIDI track, follow the same instructions except select MP3/WAV as the file type in the "Band Type" screen.

Hope that helps!

The very first software update to the G-DEC should be to allow key changes as easy as they were on the original G-DEC. Going through all of those non-intuitive steps should be unnecessary as I am sure that with everything else going on in the D-DEC that key changes would be on the super-easy list. Come on Fender, I know that if you can do it so simply on the original G-DEC you can sure do it on the new one...

The issue is the difference with using .wav and .mp3 files for the backing tracks rather than midi files. A midi file was the only file they could use for backing tracks on the previous units. With a midi file it is very easy to do as it is only data is contains no actual audio information. .wav & .mp3 files are audio data and therefore there is a lot of calculations that must be done to keep the tempo the same and change the pitch. Or likewise to keep the pitch the same while changing the tempo. It can do it to some degree with the pitch and stretch settings but that's why it's different.

But if there are certain midi files that you want to jam with consistently, it's pretty easy to go through the steps of assigning a midi file to a preset and it's a one time deal. Than after that for all of those midi files it'll be just like on the previous model. You can change keys quickly and easily after that.

Take care,

Bob
