Going back to the beginning learning the guitar...

I'm considering the G DEC...

Questions: Is it a good amp to get for someone looking to learn...?

Is it useful for training purposes?

Is there any reason that I shouldn't get one...?

It will be strictly for training in a smallish basement... no need for big sound...

Thanks,

Bob

Go for the GDec30. More everything for not a lot more dollars. You can plug in a set of headphones and get your guitar playing in the center of a stero mix. If a more formal lesson is in the works, there are at least 3 different metronomes to play with.
Try one in the mega store, turn the silver dial to P10 Happy Strum and push the Drums button until the Pattern bar lights. Happy Strum is a fairly clean preset. Twist the silver dial while the pattern bar is lit and realize you can change the beats per minute and the key of any of those patterns just by using the silver dial and pressing the Drums button to move to the next option in the Drums window.

Cheers,

Hey Robzebr,

I'm not an beginner, I am an advanced player. One of the best things I've bought this past year is the G-Dec Exec. I got it for my living room to have a guitar amp there just to noodle around with. The fact that is a classy looking addition to my furnishings aside, I have found the G-Dec to be an exciting little " Jam Buddy."
It is an excellent tool for teaching yourself to play, no matter if you are a beginner, or an advanced player. I am constantly pushing the boundaries of my playing further since I aquired the G-Dec. So even as an advanced player, it still helps me teach myself to get better. You can use the G-Dec to go from beginner to virtuoso and still find useful even when you get to that point.
When I'm not busting my chops trying to improve my playing technique, I use the G-Dec to just jam and have fun with. I was'nt too thrilled with many of the factory programmed preset sounds, so I've created about 18 guitar tones of my own. Editing the G-Dec is not hard to do at all. I did'nt need a manual to step through an example editing process, in order to create a good guitar sound. It was pretty easy to shape a guitar tone, and add some really cool effects to it and save it.
If you plan to get very serious about your playing, then I would second JohnE.'s advice. The G-Dec 30 is a bit more powerful, and has more presets and user banks, and it does everything that the G-Dec will do, and more. You can use it as a learning amp, a jam buddy, a warm-up amp, a performing amp(possibly), and a writing tool.
In my case The G-Dec has turned out to be everything it was cracked up to be and more. I'm also using the G-Dec platforms to create guitar tones that later get written into the Cyber-Twins. That's just so cool that the G-Dec can give me a preview of what I'll get out of the CT at a much higher level.

As a practice tool I think G-Dec's are great. I own a G-Dec jr and it fits the bill very good for me. I just want something simple. I don't care about a gazzilion presets, menu's, etc. I just want a few tracks to Jam with to get my playing back in shape. and with a little insulation added to the speaker enclosure and a Jensen Mod-8 speaker ($25.00 total) it sounds really good. as a matter of fact I'm looking for a dead Jr. to make a ext. cab for my own mini stack. But with Fender's 5-yr warranty I can't find one. 8)

We (the boy and I) love the G-DEC here at our house. We just upgraded from an original G-DEC to the G-DEC 30 for the extra power. Even though the power is only double (30 versus 15 watts), it sounds about 5 times louder. I've seen a local guy using the G-DEC 30 for small outdoor performances.

Our teacher also uses a G-DEC and a B-DEC (that's where we got the idea). They are great learning tools.

I have a GDec 30. The best thing to do is try it out and see what you think. I've been playing for over 40 years. I have a love hate relationship with it. Be sure to try the Line 6 Spider Jam. It uses live tracks instead of MIDI. I play live tracks through my 30 because I got so bored with the MIDI tracks. If you get one get the footswitch too. I wish it had a recording mode longer than 28 seconds. The overdubbing stays decent for 4 or 5 tracks. The half speed playback mode is pretty bad.
