my question is in the subject line. i'm using my gdec for practice and would like import songs to play along with, but don't know how to. And the fact I need it in laymans terms doesn't help, if it's in the manual, i guess i'm not apt enough to understand.

thanks

You can convert the song file to midi and import it.

There are several (freeware) and (shareware) file converters for download.

I'm not sure what type of a converter you're referring to but I've never seen an MP3 to MIDI converter that I considered decent.

swwell, I would recommend either of two approaches:

1) Find a MIDI file for a song that you would like to play along to. You can find these all over the Internet. Just Google for "songname MIDI" and it will take you to sites like Daveweb's MIDI Meltdown at http://www.davidyounker.com/midi/midi1.html or ET Planet at http://www.etplanet.com/download/midi/ or Gary's MIDI Paradise at http://www.garyrog.50megs.com/midi1.html.

Even these MIDI files may require converting as the GDEC/BDEC require "Type 0" MIDI files. You can find such a converter at Fender's GDEC/BDEC download page http://www.fender.com/support/downloads.php.

2) The other approach is to use software that will send MIDI to your GDEC (opposed to downloading the tune to the GDEC to be played later). This requires having the computer right there while you're playing. That may not sound desirable but it provides a lot of flexibility for going from song to song to song.

One such application that will do this is Guitar Pro. Guitar Pro can be easily configured to transmit MIDI data. The GDEC will, in turn, synthesize the music and play it. Now Guitar Pro does have its own synthesizer (I think its called Real-time Software Engine RSE) for playing through the computer speakers but, unless your computer has a little bit of horsepower, it can break up and sound terrible. By sending the MIDI to the GDEC, it offloads this processing to the chip in the GDEC. In this way, you can use an older computer for your practice sessions.

This is all cool stuff but it doesn't even touch on the real benefits of playing with Guitar Pro. There are literally tens of thousands of tunes available to play with Guitar Pro and they all come with the score and tab that is displayed as you play. If you're trying learn tunes, this is a hot setup.
