It's big and looks expensive--similar to the G-DEC 30. Has no midi or USB(!). Interestingly has both a guitar/hi-fi speaker and a tweeter so it's more like a flattish PA/keyboard amp speaker than a highly eccentric guitar speaker.

Is that an XLR INPUT? Huh? What are these guys smoking? Is this a Karaoke machine or what?

They seem to have put a lot of emphasis on a huge database of long jam/practice grooves. If they are really good, that could be a strong selling point as that's one of G-DEC's weaknesses.

They even copied the big silver scroll knob.

I sounds like they have the same full range speaker problem the Gdec does. They handled it with 2 speakers.

Most of the upset people I have heard from on any of several boards are upset with the Gdec's sound quality.

I still think the first company to partner up with Pioneer or someone similar will win. I'm betting the market wants sound qullity first, as a basic need. Then the other things are icing on the cake.

I for one and very excited about the Spider Jam. Here is why:

Line 6 almost always puts out very high quality sounding products. Also, the Spider Jam boasts real tracks to practice to, played by real musicans. I am so sick of the cheesey midi files (i.e., that midi piano on chicago blues). Also, I love Line 6's tech support. They always have something new and good. There is plenty to download. The G-DEC really fell short with the tech support. They never tapped the potential. Plus, its not easy for someone who does not have a degree in computer engineering. Line 6 is very user friendly. Of course I am going to wait until I play it, but chances are I will be selling my GDEC. I have enjoyed and learned a lot, but its time to move on.

I think you've put your finger on it: G-DECs have very short, crappy groove tracks. And very few of them. And it takes a lot of work and even money for hardware to set up the unit to stream more in off your PC.

Assuming Spider Jam here has a whole slew of real song-based tracks played/programmed by rock stars, that's a huge selling point. Not to mention the legendary L6 online support in which they provide the user with a ton of new tracks and tones, often created by actual music stars. But I don't see a USB port on there so how do you hook up?

This thing sure looks pricey. At least high 3's. They'd have to make it at least competitive with the G-DEC 30.

Update: this unit will retail for $449. And features 250 modeled guitar tones out of the Spider III amp created by famous performers. And over 100 endless jam loops in MP3 format of LA studio performer-played songs. That is, these are actual recordings of pro rhythm sections minus one (lead guitar), not midi loops.

Plus it has 75 giggable watts (!), and a two-way hi-fi style speaker system designed to allow the groove tracks to sound killer right out of the box. Not only that, it appears to have an XLR lo-impedance balanced output for PA or recording.

Well the gauntlet is clearly thrown in the face of Fender with this development. I'd say this trumps the G-DEC 30 nicely in a variety of ways.

It's always amazed me: why hasn't Fender ever capitalized on their extensive sponsored client list of glittering stars to develop killer tones and kick*** grooves for their modelers and practice products??? Especially since the presets in the G-DECs have been universally reviled?

Don't mind discussions about competing products -- heck, we're gearhounds too -- but I feel we're over the line here what with ads, detailed descriptions, and even now rubbing Fender's nose in it.

Here on Fender's forums I think it's only natural that we're interested in keeping discussions Fender-centric with occasional references to competing products, rather than vice-versa -- so I'm go ahead and locking this.
