i am 41 and picking up my first string instrument and have decided to go bass instead of acoustic or electric guitar. I am looking at the Squier Vintage 70s J Bass and am trying to decide on AMPS. The dealer is trying to get me into a simple Rumble15 or 25 but a friend recently suggested the BDEC as a great way to learn.

Any feedback from bass players is GREATLY appreciated!

Thx

I have been playing bass for the last 30 years. I currently have a Fender Bassman 250/210 that I play Fender 62 RI Jazz basses through - that is my gigging amp.

Having said that, I just baught a B-Dec. I love the amp, and if you are not gigging on bass yet, I highly reccomend the B-Dec. Right now for you, learning to play bass correctly, with other musicians and in many musical styles is very important. As is learning to have good meter if you don't already have it. With all of the amp modeling, effects and MIDI file capability, this is a virtually inexhaustable practice rig.

Now, here is the issue. This is NOT a gigging rig, it is a learning/practice rig. It was designed for that purpose and it does it better and more cost effectively that anything else ever available. Go into the purchase with that in mind and you will not be dissapointed.

I am having so much fun learning and trying out new ideas I wish I had bought the B-Dec long ago.

Not wanting to sound biased, is there ever a reason to buy anything other than Fender?

Not sure if you have made a decision yet, but I think the B-DEC is amazing. I've had mine for over a year now, and I appreciate it more today than I did when I first purchased it. It is very easy to use and focuses on the fundamentals of becoming a solid bassist playing any musical style.

I agree that it is not a gigging amp by itself, but in situation in which you can go straight into the board, it makes a great monitor! Also, if you play songs that are available as midi songs, you can load them into your B-DEC and take them wherever you go.

Just keep in mind that this amp is not loud enough to be used as a gigging amp. A guitar amp at the same power rating will easily drown it out.

If mine were lost or stolen, i would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I bought me a GDEC-30 for my use (I play a regular electric guitar) and I wish I had something like this when I was young and first tried to learn! I started out when I was a teen and once I got married, I didn't have time. Once the kids left the house, I got the urge to start over again. It is so great having an amp like the GDEC series amps with all the features it has and it makes you ENJOY learning.
I also would remind you (as others have stated) that this amp is really meant to only be a practice amp, but once you decide to move on and need something better (louder) to perform with, the GDEC will still be there to use for practicing because you usually don't need anything loud for around the house.
Go for it and I think you'll never regret it!
