The amp has a number of settings for amp types and this that and the other thing + 3 knob EQ. I'm trying to get a flat sound and begin simply tweaking from there. Between the amp settings and the EQ it just seems a bit complicated trying to dial up the amp the way I want it to sound.

Any ideas?

The key to getting a flat sound is to understand how the Amp modeling works. If you look on page 14 of the manual, you will find a description of all the Amp Options. To get a "flat tone" you would have to:

Choose a user preset you don't mind changing, like a teacher loop
Change to a clean amp type like the Bassman
Reduce the Gain to 1.0 (no distortion)
Change the Noise Gate to Medium to High
Make sure FX Type is none

These settings provide an essentially flat tone.
