Hi Gang,
I was just wondering if anyone who owns a 3-Thirty version has ever swapped out the original speaker with a replacement guitar amp speaker, and if so, what kind?
I'll explain why I'm asking this; I've had this amp for about a year now, and I've played around with the amp models and effects and have tried every type of editing method I could think of, but one thing I can't seem to get this amp to do is to sound more like a guitar amp.
To my ears, the previous generation of G-Dec sounded more like a guitar amp, whereas this amp sounds more like I'm plugged into a portable stereo. I don't know if a different speaker will actually make any difference, so I'm putting the question out there.
Thanks,

Hi, I had the same situation so I replaced with a Celestion 10in 8ohm greenback. I had to open up the mounting area as the new speaker was slightly larger but the end result was better then the original Fender speaker. I also considered a few of the Eminence speakers but ultimately went with the Celestion. Although better I think the amp has its limitations. I just recently got a Mustang 3 and with the additional amp and effects + 100w and this really works. I still can't part with my g-dec because of its versatility ( backing tracks, sd card ) so to answer your original question give it a try - it will be better than the stock speaker

Thank you for the reply,
I agree the 3 Thirty does have it's limitations, but it does offer me a way to play to my own backing tracks recorded in my home studio, in a portable and mobile platform. I'm thinking of using a JBL E-110 for a replacement speaker, or even an old Fender/Jensen 10" that I've had laying around for years, (I kept it around as a replacement for my old Vibrolux Reverb amp in case one of the speakers on that took a dive).
I never looked into the Mustang series of amps, but I take it from your comments, it doesn't take a SD card or other medium to work like the G-Dec.

HI, true the g-dec provides the sd / backing tracks feature which I love. That's why I am keeping it. I bought the mustang - had a mustang 2 before the g-dec - and all these amps allow for MP3/cd input but no sd option - allows me to sample all my recorded songs and use all the additional features of the mustang, but the g-dec is unique and well worth it. I contacted Celestion and Eminence for speaker recommendations before making my final decision.

Hi Eck,

So the Mustangs are similar to the older G-Dec with an input to connect an external sound source. I tried that set up in the older G-Dec models and didn't like it. The G-Dec 3 sounds much cleaner with the SD card for my external sound source.

Is the original speaker impedance 8 Ohms? I haven't opened mine up to look.

HI Harley, yes it is an 8 ohms speaker 30 w. And again the g-dec is a great amp much better then a Spider jam even though the Jam is 75w. Shows wattage is not always better. An amp tech from Muscians Friend called me to talk amps and he said that the 30w range is very popular with pro guitar players so tweaking the g-dec is worth the effort. Good luck

Hi Eck,

Thank you for the info, I had kind of assumed that it would be 8 Ohm, so that will be pretty easy to find.

I agree that the lower wattage amps are a bit more useful in smaller venues, especially since it will have to go through the PA to blend in with vocals and other instruments. I have plenty of bigger amps for larger gigs when I need them.

Here's a YT vid of a guy who kind of recommends the Eminence Legend 1058: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmRtozBy3f8

Before you swap the speaker you could try some cabinet enhancements described in this thread: http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=86322
I tried the polyfil and port tube and sounds much better to my ears.

I looked at that thread, all the pics are gone. It sounds like an interesting project though, and I might be inclined to try that. It's funny, the older G-Dec 30 I have sounds much more like a natural guitar amp, and that's more like how I want this 3-Thirty to sound.

I've never opened mine up to look inside, but if I had this issue, I would check to see if the speaker wires are connected first. If they are, then I would follow the wires up to the circuit board and see if it is plugged in there.

The headphone jack disables the speaker when you plug into it. your problem is the 1/8" headphone jack is faulty and is not reconnecting your speaker when you remove your headphones. This apparently is a common problem that has been experienced by many GDEC 3-Thirty and 3-Fifteen owners. The older GDEC's with the 1/4" jack didn't have this issue.

The reason it sounds like a HiFi amp is because it has a tweeter in addition to the main speaker. If you add a switch to cut out the tweeter, the amp will sound more like a guitar amp. The high frequencies from the tweeter make it impossible to get mellow sweet tones like a clean channel on a normal guitar amp. As it lacks EQ knobs, and even turning down the treble using the software, it still sounds hi pitch. Hope this helps
