Hi Everyone, I'm having a problem with my Fender Passport PD-500. It has always worked perfectly, but now, one of the channels (the left one) is dead. Both speakers and both cables are fine, but there is no audio coming through the left channel. Is there a fuse somewhere that I'm missing? What might the problem be, and how can I address it? Thanks.

If you look at page nine of the owner's manual, available online at:

http://support.fender.com/manuals/pro_a ... manual.pdf

... assuming that you have a Passport 500 Pro (I've never seen a PD500 -- the PD models I've seen have always been lower wattage)...

On page 9, you see item "DD". That's the fuse. But I think it's the fuse for the entire unit. I don't think there are separate fuses for the left and right channels. Similarly, the thermal shutdown circuit breaker that resets itself once things cool off is for both channels (I think).

So, it sounds like either the power amp on the one channel has died, or there's a wire loose giving it power or signal. You should take it to a Fender repair shop.

All things eventually break. Many things can be fixed. I would not recommend trying to fix this, yourself, if you lack experience with electronics. There are capacitors in the unit powerful enough to be dangerous for anyone not knowledgable enough to know what to avoid touching.

Thanks for the response. My Passport appears to be an older model. The manual is here:

Okay, get this, and please weigh in if you understand what's going on. When I tested the PD-500 yesterday, I was running a mic through channel 6 and a guitar through channel 7 - and again, only one of the output channels had any signal at all. This morning I moved the setup to channels 1 and 2 - and now, the audio is coming out of both channels. That's great news, but I'm not comfortable not knowing WHY this is the case. I don't see anything in the literature indicating that higher channels only send to one of the channels, but could that be the case? Does anyone have any other ideas as to why this might be happening? I truly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

Look on page 5 of your manual for the "Pan/Balance" control. Read that and check to see if you don't have Channels 6 &7 set to one side. That's the only thing that makes any sense.

Yeah, I thought so too. That was the first thing I checked. Thanks though.

Looking in your manual on page 9, the diagram suggests to me that the stereo/mono switch (shown on page 6) that looks like it should only affect the RCA inputs on the stereo channels may actually affect both the RCA inputs and the 1/4" input. If so, then a mono 1/4" input on that channel would come out of only one channel if the switch were in the "stereo" position. Flipping it to "mono" would fix the problem.

Test this and report back for others who may run into this problem.

If this is true, then the manual is misleading, since it says it's a balanced mono input, but in fact it might switch between balanced mono and unbalanced stereo. It would be more versatile that way, but it's only useful if you know it is available.

Thanks for the thought. It was already in the mono position, so it must not have been that.

Oh well, it's still under warranty so get an RA (return authorization) and send it back to the nearest authorized Fender Service Center. It's always sad when you have equipment problems. Fender is usually so utterly reliable too. :(

If that's not working at least try the stereo position. What have you got loose? Go Cat Go! 8)
