Hi Guys

I am out in Liberia West Africa. I have a PD 500 that tonight has given up the ghost... right before New Year :(

I have hope that I can get it fixed with help from the Forum.

The unit when powered on just gives a Green (Power LED) light that is a little dim but flashes on and off. Nothing else happens. I can if I press Phantom Power see that come on but that is all she does. Oh even when I power off the LED stays blinking until I pull out the power plug.

Worked one day with no issues and suddenly this..... no pops or noises no sudden failure.

After lots of searches I found one guy that had a very similar experience with this same unit and also requested help on another forum. One response was that "IIRC the green blinking light indicates a failure in the switching supply. Diodes D15 and D22 are covered with hot glue. You will likely find one or both shorted. They have shorted because the hot glue has caused them to overheat. When you replace them leave off the hot glue and it will be fine. The Mouser part # for the diode is 750-SB2100E-G. I have repaired several of these units with this problem".

I can take it to a friend who repairs slot machines and knows his way around a circuit board but I need to know if this sounds about right. So if anyone else has knowledge of this fault and a similar solution... or completely different I would dearly love to know. No way I can get it to a proper dealer for help and the only other electronics guy I know hasn't got a good rep.

Also If it IS the switching supply does anyone have a schematic for this. I found a PD 250 Service manual after a search and perhaps this is similar. Yes/No?

PLEASE I would appreciate any help or advice.

Cheers and Best Wishes to all

Hi, I have just reviewed my post again and saw I had stated no sudden failures. Well obviously that is not true because its suddenly failed. What I meant was it didn't just happen during a gig or whilst in use, it was working - packed away, then next time I wanted to use I had this issue.

Just thought I would clarify that point.

Thanks

Steve

While I am less familiar with this specific problem than the other person claims to be, I'd like to add one bit of advice. Yes, it sounds like a power supply issue. If there are irregularities in your source of electricity, electronic devices like the Passport may be subject to unusual stress. This could shorten the life of components as you describe. Also, temperature extremes can have such an effect.

Let your friend inspect and repair your unit. Likely, there is no great alternative before New Year's.

You might make sure to use a surge protector next time, and consider whether the storage location gets too hot or too cold. If so, you may have to find a better place to store it, if you need the system to be reliable for you.

I wish you well. Have a great party.

Thanks for the advice ContraCaller.

We do use a surge protector and try our best to store items of this nature in a controlled environment.

Trouble is this unit became a forgotten hero. It has pumped out the sound on some great nights over the last six years and we have never ever done even basic maintenance on it.

Its been used and abused to be frank and whenever I manage to get to the bar and watch the band (I work elsewhere) I get pissed because they also red line the thing. BUT it just kept on going. Stupid I know but I sometimes subscribe to the motto if it aint broke don't fix it.

Today I stripped it down and man was it dirty. The two fans where completely clogged. So no wonder it did what it did. Lesson learnt. TLC could have saved the day.

I checked out the diodes that this other guy said could be the issue and indeed it looks like they have suffered somewhat. The ends are covered with hot glue but that looks like it has toasted and become very brown. Next I will get that board out and take it to my mate to do some testing and hopefully (if he has replacements and they are damaged) swap them out and take it from there.

Cheers for the input.
