Contra seams pretty sharp! I have a Passport 300 pro I want to hook a single stage monitor to it. Can i use a small powered monitor or small say 50w amp coming from the sub-woofer port. Thanks for any help!

The Sub Out is pre-filtered so that only extremely low frequencies come out of it. The design is so that you plug a powered subwoofer into that port and you get that subwoofer's power amp dedicated to playing just those low notes through a speaker designed to play just low notes. It gives you thump. It gives you deep, low notes.

And that's pretty much all it gives you. It would suck as a source of sound for anything used as a monitor.

Add that when you plug that in, the main speakers stop making any attempt to play those low notes, so your audience gets a very bright sound, devoid of all bass. Without a subwoofer, this is not a good thing.

You need a powered monitor connected through whatever adapters you need to get the line-level signal from the "Stereo Out" port. That's 1/8" TRS. So, there's a slight problem dealing with a mono-only monitor, since this is stereo output. You need something that "mono-izes" the signal.

I use a Mackie SRM150 that can take two RCA inputs as a monitor. It has three input channels. Two are mono XLR or mono 1/4" TS input. The third accepts two RCA inputs (stereo). Even though it's a mono amp/speaker, it takes the stereo input and blends the two channels into mono. You'll want to do this rather than just take ½ of the signal so you get the full signal strength.

I've also used an adapter that takes 1/8" TRS stereo input, mono-izes it and gives it a volume knob before passing it along as mono XLR. It works, but the volume level is lower than optimal. The volume knob on this adapter is not a plus. I've never needed to set it lower than max.

So, basically, any powered speaker will work, so long as you can deal with stereo-to-mono, and 1/8" TRS to whatever you need as input to the powered speaker. Since the Stereo Out port has its own volume control, a separate volume control to the external speaker is not altogether necessary, though it doesn't hurt to have it.
