I own 2 fender passports ,a P-250 and a PD-250. The P-250 will power up ,green light on but I get no sound with microphones or a MP3 player .

With the MP3 player connected and everything turned up all the way I hear a very faint sound of music. Very faint ,you can't hear it over the tv set in the living room.

Any ideas what could be wrong ?
Thanks

What is the history of your P250 Passeports ?

It work fine before ?

Your PD 250 work with your MP3 , no trouble with , only with P250 ?

I just bought it "tested as working, all ports are working" and when I received it I found it as I stated , no sound ,very faint.
I have requested a refund but if I don't get it I was wondering what the problem could be, and if anyone has had any experience in having a Passport repaired.

If you want an help you should say all story . Not same thing if the Passeport work last night when you used it or if Passeport receive not working !!!!

Everything is possible , it coul be a defective output semiconductor / transistors . Or input jack , input transistor ..........

Nothing you can do yourself . You have to see a qualified tech.

Okay, let's get back to the problem:

There are several different places to control the volume and several ways to connect things, and you haven't described anything about any of the connections you've made or the volume levels set, so let's go through the signal path from source to speaker:

1. Let's start with that MP3 player you described. It probably has a 1/8"TRS (Tip, Ring, Shaft) stereo headphone port. Use a cable that has 1/8"TRS stereo at one end and two RCA plugs at the other end. If you don't have one, any Radio Shack, Crutchfields, or other stereo or electronics store should have one for you. I personally prefer to spend a few extra dollars on high quality cables. Monster makes one that I use often.

2. So, plug the 1/8" TRS end into your MP3 player and plug the two RCA plugs into the two RCA ports for the channel marked "STEREO-1". Make sure both ends are plugged in well, and make sure you are plugging into the two ports on "STEREO-1" and not one for "STEREO-1" and the other for "STEREO-2". And don't plug into the "TAPE OUT" ports. Just use "STEREO-1".

3. So, now that the signal path is complete, let's set the volume on the MP3 player all the way up. You may want to turn it down a little later, but since your problem is not enough volume, let's start by having the volume all the way up.

4. Just to the right of the two biggest knobs on the Passport P-250 is the "Mode" switch. For this purpose, make sure it is switched to "Stereo". According to the manual, that means "up", not "down". [I'll continue this in another message because the site doesn't allow long messages.]

5. Make sure the VIP control for channel 1 is all the way down to zero, maximally counterclockwise. Do the same for "REV/AUX" on all channels.

6. Set EQ and PAN at noon (pointing straight up) on all channels.

7. Set LEVEL on all channels to zero (maximally counterclockwise), except for STEREO-1, which you should turn up to maybe 2:00 (or 60% of it's potential). You can turn it all the way clockwise if you like, but it might get loud. Make sure the MP3 player is playing something, or when you turn it on, you might be rather surprised.

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the 1/4"TS ports so that one is plugged into one of the two "LEFT/MAIN" ports (it doesn't matter which one) and the other is plugged into one of the "RIGHT/MONITOR" ports (it doesn't matter which one). Don't plug speakers into the "SEND" or "RETURN" ports. Make sure the other end of the speaker cables are plugged into the speakers.

8. Slowly turn the two big knobs marked LEFT/MAIN and RIGHT/MONITOR up until things are loud enough.

I have used a passport P250 for over 10 years. Mostly for outside events involving car shows.
This new P250 is a used purchased I bought for use as a "back-up" or to use connected to my other Passport so I could use 4 speakers at some larger events.
I believe I understand the operation of the system .
My question I quess is more toward "what the possible cause of practically no sound and if anyone has had any experience having a Passport repaired , costs ?".
Thank you for your response.
I have located a repair center approx. 45 minutes from home, If I need to take it for repair.
I'm hoping the seller will give me a refund and save me the trouble.

Sorry. I didn't link this message to others and recognize you as an experienced user. I've used other Passports, not the P250, and from looking at the manual, there are more "gotcha"s with this one than with the others. The Mode switch can cause problems. The VIP knob can cause problems. The double labeling on stereo vs. Main/Monitors can cause problems.

The symptom fits having some stage of pre-amplification turned way down, like hitting the Pad switch on other Passports. If the VIP knob were turned all the way up, it would cause this effect on all channels except Channel 1, for instance. This also implies that if the VIP circuitry were poorly connected to the VIP knob, that might short out and create this symptom. Have you tried a microphone in the XLR port for channel 1 yet? Plugging dynamic microphones into the 1/4" ports would have this same symptom, as would plugging ANYTHING into the AUX/RET ST port.

Generally, if everything is very quiet, it sounds like a power-amp problem, but if there is hum or static (like something is turned up loud), but the signal is quiet, then there's a problem in the pre-amp stage, or with an internal connection to the power amplifier.

The only reason I listed every step is that there's a possibility that as an experienced user, you ALWAYS set something like the Mode switch or the VIP knob one way and never think about it again, and maybe this other guy who sold you this unit sets it a different way, and maybe you don't think to check something that he has set "wrong" by the way you use the device.

If it needs repair, then it needs repair. I can't predict what the repair guy will say.
