I have a new Fender Passport Mini and love it.
I also have an iPod Nano, 7th generation.

I dislike using the touch-screen slider on the iPod for volume control - its just too sensitive and finicky.

Couldn't I use an 1/8" cable with a 1/4" adaptor, plug the iPod through the guitar input, and then use the Fender Passport's volume control instead?

I don't see why not. Obviously, you would want to set the iPod's volume to a low or medium setting to avoid too much input strength.

Please advise.
Thanks for a great product :)

Use the 1/8" Aux stereo input, NOT the 1/4" mono input. The manual tells you to do this for an MP3 player, and that's basically what the iPod is.

Ok thanks, I'll use the 1/8" Aux input and deal with the iPod's touchy volume control.

I glazed over that the 1/4" input was mono only - but I should have realized that

ROCK ON!

I just noticed the part in the manual about Fender not providing a volume control for Aux input. I can see why the engineers made that decision, but I also see where you are coming from. Sorry that Apple didn't provide a better interface for that iPod. They usually have great interfaces on their hardware, but in this case, it sounds like they failed.
