I use a Zoom A2 multi-effects pedal with my Passport Pro 500. I've used it for a couple years with no issues. All of a sudden, I now get a volume shift as if it was set on a tremalo setting, fading in and out at a rate of about a cycle a second. I thought it might be the pedal, and reset all defaults - no luck. I then tried the pedal in another acoustic amp and it worked fine?? So I'm wondering if you may have any idea why this is happening. FYI, I connect from the Zoom pedal with a 1/4 TRS jack out, and go into the passport with an XLR port. Any thoughts?

I was confused when you first described this, because it sounded like you were somehow using a pedal to control the Passport. I think you have a guitar or some other sound source going into the pedal for effects that are then sent from the pedal to the Passport.

So, what could make a Passport fade in and out at about 1Hz?

Most likely, something in the pedal is sending a signal that fades in and out, and there's something going on that you might be missing that causes this to happen.

Somewhat less likely, the signal coming from the device is really hot (as in "loud"), and if the power amp is overheating trying to send that signal to the speakers, there might be some kind of protection circuit here, fading out. I'd expect that device to have a line level output, and the XLR inputs on the PassPort Pro 500 require that you turn on the Pad button to bypass the mic pre-amp in the mixer in order to bring the signal level down to what the amp can handle.

To troubleshoot, try to isolate the problem. You already did some isolation by trying out another acoustic amp. Here are other ideas:

Try using the Pad button and turn the channel volume up and see if this stops happening.

Try other sound sources and see if the Passport does the same thing with other sound sources.

Bypass the effects pedal and plug straight into the 1/4" TS port on the Passport. You won't need the Pad button turned on if you do that. The Passport assumes that signals on the 1/4" port are at line level, while it assumes that inputs via XLR are mic level. The Pad button is for line level signals going in to the XLR port.

That's the best guessing I can do just now. I hope it helps.
