I have two PD-250 Passports, both bought new, and one of them quit working in the middle of a party where I was the DJ. The units protect light went on and now I can't get any sound out of it. The power light goes on but nothing else happens. This unit was my backup unit that I'd only used it about 5 times. Does anybody know what could be wrong with it and what I need to do to get it working again? I called the factory authorized repair center in my area but they want a minimum of $300 to look at it. Any help would be appreciated.

Fuses?

Ask Will Smith

I have the Passport 500 with manufacturer's warranty (five years)
on the 2-3 year old PA. Never had a problem.
Even had the speaker bound 10 feet off an unsecured ledge
where I stupidly set it.

By the way.

If you are using these for anything more than background music,
wireless microphones in small rooms or very light dancing,
good luck. My 500 is good for small rooms,
but when I push it, the 500 clips and is not designed to
compete for loudness in a room that is full of carper and drapes
and table cloths, etc. Except for the 1/4" jack, the speaker
wire is essentially RCA. Not a lot of power opportunity there.

So, not sure what you are doing, but if you push the power,
my bet is they will break.
Did you buy it new? Toppscore :)

Like I said, I have more then one of these and have used the other one for 8 years with no problems, so I know it's limitations. I was hoping to get some advice as to how I might get the protect light to go off and return the unit to a working condition. I also use professional quality speaker cable for the unit, not the thin and cheap cable supplied with the unit.

I just pulled up the manual for the Passport 250. It says:

"The mains (AC) fuse holder is under the IEC (power cord) socket on the right rear of the Tower. To change a fuse, remove the IEC plug and, using an appropriate tool pull out the fuse holder. Note there is a spare fuse in the fuse holder; the Passport utilizes a 6.3A 250V fuse. Only replace fuses with one of an identical value and size."

That's definitely your first thing to check. If they already have a spare fuse, it shouldn't cost you a dime (unless you want to replace the spare fuse for the next time this happens).

Fuses blow sometimes. It's not always how hard you push the unit. Sometimes it's how hard the power going into it spikes. Do you use a surge protector? If not, likely a surge protector costs less than a Passport 250. Might be worth investing in.
