I have a Sony 8GB USB drive that is only 6 months old. It works great on Mac and PC's.. never had ANY issues with it.

Question:
I recorded a performance the other day with the built in USB recording system. I didn't format the USB drive in the Passport before recording but I didn't think I had to. After I brought the USB drive home and plugged it into my Mac I dragged the "500Pro Track 001.wav" onto my desktop. The file simply won't open or playback on anything.. not iTunes, Quicktime or anything else I tried. I even tried to convert the file to an MP3 with a conversion software to no avail.

Tell me it's not because I didn't format the USB on the Passport before I started recording.. I understand the process for CF cards on cameras and such but never for a USB drive!

Anyone?

More than likely, the fact that you got to a file named "500Pro Track 001.wav" implies that there is no problem with the USB drive. If the Passport had problems with the drive, it would not have recorded the file.

So, what could have been the problem? Well, if you turned off the Passport while it was recording the file instead of pressing the "Stop" button to end the recording BEFORE killing power to the Passport, the file might be corrupted.

You might want to pull up Finder on your Mac, and "secondary click" the file (two finger click on a track pad or right-mouse-click on a mouse, or hold the Control button down on your keyboard while clicking with the mouse or track pad) and choose "Get Info" on the file to see how big it is. If the file size is zero, it's a corrupted file. You might as well delete it and try again.

In general, it's good to test these things before making really important recordings.
