While the Passport is a great little PA system for dances and most concert settings, I now have experience with using it in an acoustically live hall constantly begging for an opportunity to squeal shrieking feedback, as well as trying to use the USB port on the Passport 500 to make a live recording of a choir with astoundingly unpredictable, broad-range dynamic changes.

It's hard to record someone whispering something to a crowd, prompting loud whooping, clapping and stomping. I need something electronic that can quickly turn the volume down in response to sound levels that otherwise cause clipping. It's also hard to amplify a choir that is far from my microphones (so everyone is heard), in a room that has one narrow band of frequency that really wants to feed back. I need something electronic that lets me find that narrow band and mute it.

The Passport 500 Pro has ports for PRE-OUT/POWER AMP IN. Does anybody have experience with hardware that could plug in there and offer parametric EQ control and compression? I have an aging MacBook and a FireWire 400-based I/O box for it with two channels for input/output in either XLR or 1/4". Should I use this with some sort of software to do these tasks? Would such an investment likely create latency issues with a live performance unless I get a newer MacBook Pro?

Your experience in this area might save me a lot of painful and expensive experimentation. Thanks in advance.
