Sometimes I wish the manual had a wiring diagram...

I've been working under the assumption that the XLR inputs on my Passport 500 Pro are for mic level inputs with the Pad switched off, and for line level inputs with the Pad switched on, and that the 1/4" inputs are for line level input and are not affected by the Pad switch. The manual suggests as much.

Yesterday, I was testing an old sound-hole-mounted pickup for acoustic guitar. It has a 1/4" TS plug. Plugged into channels 7 or 8, I got no noticeable signal. The channel LED stayed dark. Plugged into any channel 1-6, with the Pad off and the volume and Hi EQ pegged to the max, the sound was acceptable (though less clear than the same guitar with its built-in active electronics and the volume level around 10:00 (maybe 3 out of 10?).

When I turned the Pad switch on, out of curiosity, the signal disappeared.

So, is it that the 1/4" inputs and XLR inputs are the same for channels 1-6 and the Pad switch makes the difference between line level and mic level, while channels 7 and 8 are line level only? If not, then why does the Pad work at all for the 1/4" inputs? What is 20db louder than line level?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks.

In case anyone else wants an answer to this, I got a response through other means that the Pan button on the stereo ports does the same 20db signal drop to the 1/4" inputs that mono channels apply to XLR. This basically mutes the channel, unless you have an input that is 20db louder than normal line level signals.
