Here's a two part question - I have a TC Helicon Harmony Gxt vocal processor and mic pre amp which has XLR outs only. My question is - if I'm pre amping my signal and then plugging that into the Fender (which as I understand has pre amped mic inputs - is that going to be too much juice going into the channel - causing gain problems? It is working but I'm wondering if this is diminishing potential gain (or head room?)

Secondly - the Harmony G has stereo XLR outs - and as the fender's mic inputs are all mono I can only use the mono out of the mic pre- could I not use the 1/4" stereo in inputs with an XLR adaptor? Would this cause impedance problems - or signal issues? Recommendations on adapters?

Part One: Just push the "Pad" button so that the button is lit. That drops the volume level by 20db -- enough to turn a line level signal into a mic level signal for the amp. I've done it. It works fine.

Part Two: Get two cables that have female XLR at one end and male 1/4" TS or TRS at the other end. Plug each 1/4" cable into the appropriate "L" or "R" port in one of the stereo channels of the PassPort. I've done this, too. It works fine. All 1/4" ports in the Passport assume line level signals. Only the XLR ports assume mic level signals, and they can take line level with the "Pad" buttons switched on. The Pad button has no effect on any of the 1/4" ports.

thanks for you response C
I remembered I had a new XLR to 1/4" TS and used as a test before I invested in another cable. I ran it from the left (Mono) out of the TC Helicon into the L (mono) Stereo CH on the fender which yielded no results - no indication of signal to the channel even with the gains maxed on both units. I tried the same scenario on a couple of the other line channels just in case with the same results. To further test - I plugged my guitar into my Fender 30w acoustasonic and ran an instrument cable from it's line out jack to the passport L (M) and got signal.

On the surface, it seems that the mic pre doesn't put out enough juice for the fender to recognize but I think it strange that there would be no signal present at all, even when maxed. They say the pre is "Studio Quality". I looked at the manual on line and it lists the preamps specs but I'm a newb to sound theory and couldn't understand it.

any insights would be appreciated..

There's a bunch of possible sources of the problem. You say you are new at this, so I can't assume anything. Please don't be insulted if I mention things you definitely know about.

You talk about having the gains maxed on "both units". You don't tell what sound source you are plugging into the Helicon. If it's a condenser mic, then you might not have the phantom power turned on. If you don't have a sound source plugged into the Helicon, then you won't get anything out of it. You also haven't shown any kind of test for the cable. It could be a bad cable. And, of course, the Helicon needs to be plugged into AC power and have the power switched on.

The Helicon says it provides phantom power, but I don't see a switch on the pictures on their Web page. Check out the manual. If one of the presets or some other mechanism turns on and off the phantom power, you may need to turn it on. Or if you have a dynamic mic, it won't need phantom power and this is not an issue.
