I have a Passport PD-500, P/N 069-1007, Type PR 599 that I use for both my Jazz & Celtic bands. First, I must say that this unit was recommended by our local music store and it has been a godsend to me. Easy to transport, setup, operate and take down, plus the sound quality has been superb with both electronic & acoustic instruments and professional vocals. I absolutely love this unit!

I have some questions that I hope you can answer: first, are the RCA Tape Out jacks configured for Mic Out or Line Level output (manual suggests Line)? Second, which volume controls determine how loud an instrument is on the Tape Out jack, Level or Monitor? Finally, is the Monitor Out a Mono or Stereo jack and is it a Mic Level or Line Level signal?

Again, thanks for a terrific P/A package... by the way, I use a pair of Galaxy Audio Hot Spot PA6S powered monitors to help the musicians hear every single note on stage. Stage monitoring really helps keep the ensemble sound together and balanced. All our musicians love it.

I'm a little confused. I've never seen a PD-500. I have seen manuals for a PD-250, which have the features you are describing. I'll speak from what I know, which is not perfectly authoritative.

RCA is a line-level standard. Nobody connects mic-level signals via RCA. Some really old turntables have lower-level signals connecting via RCA, but that's cartridge-level, not mic-level, and I'm 98% sure the Passport was not set up for a turntable without a preamp. It's just too rare, and the Passport line has always gone for designing for the masses.

All 1/4" connections are either line level (input) or speaker level (output). The Monitor Out plugs for the PD-250 are speaker-level outputs for passive monitors, not line-level signals for powered monitors. You'll massively overdrive your monitors if you plug powered speakers into that jack.

You might be able to get adapters to go from the Tape Out to your powered monitors, if you really want to use the powered monitors with this system. It wasn't designed for powered monitors.

If you want both a tape out and output for powered monitors, get a Y adapter to split the signals from the Tape Out.

My understanding of the Tape Out function is that there is no master volume control for that output. You get the sum of volume levels set by the input volume levels for each channel. You'll have to turn the overall volume level up or down on the tape deck itself, or on your powered monitors.

I hope this helps.
