Just received my passport pro 500. This will mostly be used for home karaoke and small parties. Tried to plug in my laptop today from headphone 1/8 out to 1/8 stereo in on passport. When plugged all the way in on the passport there was no sound out of the passport. If I slightly pulled the plug out there was sound but not very good sound, distorted and not very loud. At the time I tried it earlier today all I had was 2 1/8 to rca that I put together to make a 1/8 to 1/8, just had rca junction in the middle. Didn't have true 1/8 to 1/8 at the time. Before I ran the 1/8 out from the computer to rca in on my home surround sound with no problems so the cable is good. Do you think the 2 cables together are causing my problem ? Or maybe something else. This is the first time i've ever played with a pa so I'm new to this. I haven't been able to test the sound enough to see what the bass is like but I was wondering if there is a preferred sub to use with this system. I did read where someone used a home theater powered sub and used the 1/4 to rca adapter. Also all my mics are 1/4, what is the difference in the xlr connector input and the 1/4 input ?
Thanks

Seems the problem was the cable, replaced it with a new one and sound was better. Still have buzzing noise in background which looks like it is the onboard soundcard on the laptop. Ordered an external soundcard hopefully it will fix the problem. There is no buzzing when playing an ipod through the 1/8 stereo in, only the laptop.

For the buzzing, try using an automotive inline noise filter. Should cost about $10-$15. Worked for me when my laptop was doing it.

There are a lot of little potential sources of the problem. First, I'd suggest that you not mess around with extra adapters. You paid money for the Passport 500. Spend a couple bucks on a nice quality 1/8" stereo patch cable. I went to Crutchfield and bought the best one they had so that if I had a problem, nobody would blame it on the $30 three-foot-long cable. Why pay almost a grand for an amp and then spoil the sound with a $3 cable?

Next, consider that sound cards vary a lot in computers. Most Apple products have high quality sound cards because Apple is not just a computer company. They fit between computers and consumer electronics. Many PCs have really cheap sound cards. If your computer is a desktop, consider buying a better sound card for it. If it's a laptop, consider getting an external interface for audio (the sort of thing that DJs use). They have their own sound cards that are remarkably better than the stuff PC manufacturers use in "business" oriented laptops. Generally, "game machine" laptops would be expected to have better sound cards.

Alternatively, buy an iPod and put your music on that. The sound card in an iPod is better than you'll find in most business-grade PC laptops. If your laptop was "inexpensive", one of the ways they get that way is to use remarkably "inexpensive" (a.k.a. "crappy") sound cards.

The Passport 500 is a great PA system, but it won't make bad sound sources sound good. You need to start with a good signal in order to get good output.

I have a monster 1/8 patch cable that partly solved the problem the rest was solved when I installed a usb external soundcard on my laptop.
