I'm having trouble using my MXL 990 mic with my new Passport 150.
http://www.mxlmics.com/products/900_series/990/990.html

Whether I plug it into the channel 1 or channel 2 XLR inputs, I get no sound, even with channel and master levels set to full and pads disabled.

Is it because the Passport 150 doesn't supply phantom power to condenser mics?
If so, what do I need to insert between the mic and the Passport to get things working?

Thanks for the help--this is a great board.

Assuming that your new Passport 150 is the Passport Pro, according to the online copy of the manual, you are right. You need a phantom power supply. Likely, you could get one where you got the microphone. Any place that carries PA systems or even many music supply stores that carry guitar amps and similar gear would carry them.

You can also google "phantom power supply". There are many of them.

Phantom power comes in two flavors. The most common is 48 volt, which is what your microphone needs, according to the tech specs on the Web page you pointed to. Some older systems use 12 volt, which might destroy your mic with too much amperage. So make sure the phantom power supply you get is 48 volt.

The one similar unit I've seen was a box that had male and female XLR ports on it and an AC cord. I think it had an on/off switch. It's that simple. There's nothing to adjust. Put this in line between the microphone and the Passport (using two XLR cables instead of one).

The Passport 150 Pro's bigger brothers have 48 volt phantom power, but not the 150.
