My music partner and I just bought a Passport 500 PA. We love it. However, we notice that when we play outside, there is an awful sound that is produced—it almost sounds like pebbles hitting a windshield. It's very loud and disturbing. I've heard what normal peaking sounds like, and this is much worse. We are wondering if there is something wrong with the PA. The noise seems to be related to the vocal parts, but seems to come and go within a song without changing the singing distance from the mic or its volume. We have tried to recreate this phenomenon at home, and are unable to recreate it even with everything cranked up to its loudest. We are 2 electric guitars fed into the PA through Roland Cubes, and 1 vocal mic.

The sound wave looks flat (like peaking), and a friend of mine was able to use a declipping program to rescue a couple of tunes. But we still have no idea what is causing it, and it seems random. Any suggestions?

I could interpret your description a couple of ways. First of all, do you hear the sound live and on the recordings, or only on the recordings?

Secondly, could it be that the microphones that you are using do not have foam wind covers? Wind blowing across a microphone does make a remarkable crashing noise. It won't happen indoors.

Some mics are designed to handle this, with build-in foam filters. Others have blocks of foam you push over the end of the mic. And then, some just don't handle wind well at all.

You say you never hear the sound if you use the Passport indoors. Try blowing on the microphone and see if that's the sound you are talking about.

If you got more specific about the microphone you are using, we could probably help you better.

If you don't hear the sound live, but it is noisy in the recording, then it may be that you are cranking the individual tracks too high and then throttling back the sound with the master volume. The recorder built into the Passport ignores the master volume and just adds together all the sound coming into the individual channels. If you turn the individual channels down and turn up the master volume, you'll get less noise and volume on the recording.
