When I record something, it makes a clipping sound at certain times. The ironic thing is that I don't even have the channels maxed, they're still kind of dull on the PC when i play it back. It clips on both the passport and my PC during playback. Any idea what it might be?

The recording to the USB drive is done from the signal mixing the individual channels without reference to the Master Volume. If you have a lot of channels running at once and you have the volume level high on the individual channels, but have everything turned low on the Master Volume, the recording will be saturated, even though what is coming out the speakers is not. If you turn down the individual channels while recording and turn up the Master Volume to get the volume level you want live, then the recordings will be better.

I'm not sure about the way the number of channels in use affects the volume, but I'm suspecting that the more channels, the louder. This is one of the few areas where the simplicity of the design of the interface has a compromise that can have a negative effect on the recording. You have no control over the overall volume level of the recording. You just get what comes out.

The recordings I've done have tended to be of low volume, since I have tended to have relatively low volume on the individual channels, then used the Master Volume to set the overall level in the house. For my uses, this gives me plenty of volume, and gives me lots of play room in the individual channels to get the mix right.
