Hi Ken, (or whoever that can answer )

I was wondering here because I have been trying 2 USB sticks that my brand new passeport 500 could not format/detect... All the transport lights were blinking at the same time.

The third one was an old 640 megs key that worked but even then, sometimes, it would NOT go detected... (but on this very case, I suspect corroded contacts onto the USB device itself)...

I am a professional electronics technician myself so you can fairly eliminate basic mistakes...

Now, my questions are:

1) Is there a LIST somewhere of KNOWN compatible USB keys/sticks? Because I definitely could NOT get two brand of USB keys to be formatted... either from my PC with win7 or the passeport's unit procedure itself...

2) What TYPE of USB is compatible... Meaning USB 1.1 or USB 2 ( I assume that this unit is not compatible with the new USB 3 feature...)?

Regarding the formats... I get it that FAT16 and FAT32 are ok. I was wondering about what cluster sizes can be selected?

Thanks is advance...

Other than this, I am fairly satisfied from this portable PA system... Sound is very good, natural and quite loud... And if you add a subwoofer, it sounds very very nice! I like it a lot... and the setup time falls under 5 minutes... not to mention ease of transport! I am sold to this design!!

I will try a few other brands of USB sticks... I will go for less cheaper brands because so far, I have used generic sticks from Wallmart on the basis that I would use ONE key for a given type of music and/or set for that particular night...

Note that the problem USB drives can't be read by a PC. You've answered your own question. Any USB FLASH drive that can be read by a PC can be used by the Passport 500 Pro. I reformatted one of them with the Apple Mac OS X file system and that one won't read on the Passport Pro -- but then it also won't read on a Windows machine.

FLASH drives wear out. Likely yours are dead. It's not a compatibility issue. It's a functional one.

Use newer drives.

@ Contracaller

Sorry, I meant to say that i coud not get my PC to format the key in order for it to be read by the Passport system but it would format without problems...

But, i found out the solution and it's simple: some USB sticks simply are not compatible. Period. I have found many that were since that post and all is fine!!

Thanks for your caring to reply this said...

Have a great weekend... :D

If a USB drive is JUST A DRIVE, it should work fine. The problem is that some vendors try to set their product apart from the masses by adding security features that autoload a utility into Windows to access the drive. Without the utility, you can't access the drive. So Macs, Unix computers and Passports can't use the drive.

You need any generic USB FLASH drive. If the packaging says "PC-Only", it's probably not a good choice.
