I have an new bass amp that I never use and I would like to use it as a sub amp for my new passport 300. For some reason I get no sound out of it. I have it plugged in and it works however when I plug it in to the sub out I get no sound whatsoever. Am I doing something wrong?

Also how would I connect a few monitors to this system. We have a gig playing outside this weekend and it sure would be nice to have a few monitors.

While a bass amp is not the same thing as a powered sub-woofer and will not provide the same quality of sound, it should definitely make sound. I've done this with a 300w Peavey bass guitar amp. I didn't like the sound and bought a 400w Gemini powered subwoofer and I'm much happier.

So why are you getting no sound? Let's make a checklist:

You are using a 1/4" instrument patch cable (NOT a speaker cable) to connect the Passport's Sub Out port to your bass amp's Line In port.

If it doesn't have a Line In, make sure you start out with the bass amp turned down to about "2" and connect to the port you'd normally plug your bass into.

Many bass amps also have 1/4" headphone jacks. Don't plug anything into the headphone jack.

Connect the regular speakers and power cable to the Passport and play something through the Passport. Adjust settings as you normally would. Make sure the music you play has bass in it. The Sub Out port receives no treble signal at all. It only gets the lowest of lows.

The Passport has no monitor outs. If you want monitors, you need to put them in line with your inputs. In other words, use guitar amps or powered monitor speakers with a pass through port for monitors. Plug a mic into the powered monitor, then plug the powered monitor into the Passport.

There are advantages to this. Each musician has control over the volume of their own monitor. Each musician hears himself loudest. Powered monitors can be small and relatively inexpensive. I'm considering a Beheringer 5" powered monitor that mixes 3 inputs at the monitor, mounts on a mic stand and passes through to the Passport at either mic or line level. $140 list.

If you have a powered monitor (or several of them) that you would like to use to monitor the entire system (i.e. have the same output from the Passport system speakers coming out of your monitors, rather than monitoring individual channels) then you would go from the Stereo out to the input of your powered monitor. If you have more than one powered monitor, you can then daisy chain the signal from one monitor to the next.
