I got a Gemini GVX-SUB15P that does the job pretty well. I do sound for a techno-contra dance series with the DJ and the caller plugged into a Fender Passport 500, which has a 1/8" stereo patch cord connecting the 500's stereo output plugged into a stereo channel on my Fender Passport 300. The 300 has a 1/4" mono instrument cable (not a speaker cable) connecting the Sub Out port from the 300 into the Gemini sub-woofer. With both the frequency and volume controls on the Gemini set at "noon" (straight up, 50% of full volume) the Gemini gives enough punch and clarity for what I do, and it costs less than the other sub-woofers I found in its power range (400w RMS).

Apparently, Gemini is not a prestigious brand name, but as I said, this one works for what I do. It keeps up with the four Passport speakers that I arrange in a straight line at the music end of the hall. When I plug the sub-woofer into the 300, the 300 gets louder with a crisp treble that actually has more punch to it than the 500 has, since the 500 doesn't have the sub-woofer and has to use most of its wattage driving its 10" woofer. The Gemini has a 15" woofer.

Gemini makes a bigger unit with an 18" woofer, but that weighs too much for me to lift alone and I can't rely on other people helping me carry things. As it is, the sub-woofer weighs slightly less than the combined Passports and takes up about as much space in my car.

So, if you have a 300, this sub-woofer should be plenty for you.

I should add that I recently did a techno-contra with half the show run from a laptop's headphone jack and half done from a decent quality DJ mixing board. The experience taught me that the quality of the sound source makes a HUGE difference in the output quality, especially when it comes to the bass.

The laptop started out with its volume cranked high. The bass was so muddy it was awful. I thought the subwoofer had broken. The bass was loud. It was just indistinct. Turning down the bass EQ helped, but not much. Loud or soft, the bass was mush.

I got him to turn the volume down to about 50% on the laptop and I cranked up the Passport and the sound improved remarkably. It wasn't great, but it was now dance-worthy.

By contrast, the pro mixing board was stunning. The difference was jaw-dropping. It made me laugh and say, "Wow!" a lot. So, if you can, get a sound source made to connect to a PA system, and not just a laptop with a cheap sound card. It makes a huge difference. I suspect that even an iPod would be better than a laptop. Try out different sources, if you can, before your event. See for yourself.
