We purchased a Passport 500 to announce at base ball games. It is awesome and we get lots of complements on the music between innings. We have been putting up and taking down the speakers every night. My question is, do we have to? Are the speakers weatherproof / waterproof?

Thanks,

The engineers who work for Fender can answer this better than I can, but I know that many plastics become brittle and wear out before their time when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. The ultra-violet radiation in sunlight is unkind to a lot of materials. I'd be surprised if the plastic case of the Passport would hold up well to that.

The speaker cones may also not handle water well. I'm not sure what material they are made from. Historically, they've been made of paper and react badly to water, though sometimes the paper is treated for exterior use, and some plastics have come into use.

Then there's the amp and the circuit boards inside. I'd worry about condensation. Having worked with other PA systems, my advice would be to continue to put the system into protected storage, and be really happy about how light these speakers are to put up when needed. I work with a group-owned sound system and each of the two speakers weighs more than the entire Passport system. I do not enjoy putting THOSE speakers above head height, up on a pole for every event.

By comparison, the Passport is a joy to set up.

Yes, I would suggest packing up the system after games as well. As ContraCaller mentioned, the speakers are exposed to weather through the grill, so it would not be a wise decision to leave them open to the elements. The Passport systems are designed to be fairly weather resistant when latched together for transport, but at that point it would make sense to just take the system inside rather than leaving it out in the weather. I hope this answers your question.
