Hello,

Previously we had the original PD 500 system but decided to upgrade to the Passport 500 Pro. A new event is coming up where we need to be able to address an audience and we have been having quite a bit of feed back problems. One noticeable difference is there is no feedback killer button. We are set up to use a wireless body pack and omnidirectional lapel microphones. The speakers are placed in front of the presenter, but we still cannot get the volume up very loud without feedback occurring.

Could you give us any ideas as to how to diminish feed back using the system? What can we do to fix this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd recommend buying longer speaker cables and placing the speakers on speaker stands above the head of the speaker, and out toward the corners of the room. You don't want the tweeter horns on the same level as the microphone. Putting them higher makes the sound clear enough for the audience, but not as loud to the mic. Aiming the speakers at the diagonally opposite corner also helps.

Feedback can happen either because the tweeters are aimed right at the mic, or it can happen because you have the speakers aimed straight at the back wall, and the reflected sound comes at you, all in phase. It creates a kind of "surface effect" that can be very powerful and can wreck the sound.

By aiming diagonally across the room, the sound waves from each speaker don't arrive at exactly the same time all along the wall. This breaks up echoes that otherwise become feedback. This is why recording studios have foam panels that break up the flatness of the walls. If you can't break up flat walls, the next best thing is to avoid aiming speakers directly at them.

In addition to what ContraCaller suggested, I would suggest using a different microphone. Are you using the Passport wireless system, or another system? I would suggest trying the headset microphone that comes with the Passport Executive Wireless kit. Or, if you are ok with using a Handheld wireless microphone, the HH Passport wireless sytem would work well in your application. In general, my experience with lapel microphones is that they don't pick up your voice very well unless the gain is turned up very high, which lends the system to feedback quite easily.
