I'm thinking of upgrading from the Passport 250 to the 500 Pro.

As I understand it, I can hook monitors to the 500 Pro via the stereo out jack (Or is it jacks, plural?). Can anyone suggest a compatible powered monitor system? And how do they hook up...in series or parallel? How many ohms should the speakers be rated for? I'm looking for a pair of monitors to be placed at the front of the band.

Thank you.

PS: Can a feedback eliminator be used with the 500 Pro?

You can't do this with passive speakers. You'd need "active" speakers, or "powered" monitors. When working with powered monitors, you don't talk about ohms. You talk about watts.

Active or powered monitors don't take speaker-level input. They take line-level input. They have their own amplifier built in.

The complication here is that the line-level signal from the Passport 500 Pro comes out of a 1/8" stereo jack. Powered monitors want either a 1/4" mono plug, or an XLR (mono) plug. So, you'll need an adapter.

Keep in mind that this won't give you a separate mix for the house speakers and for the monitors. So, you'll have some complicated adapters to work with, and the result won't be that different from having the musicians listen to themselves from the house speakers.

My personal advice is that it's better if each musician has a powered monitor connected in-line between their microphone or instrument and the channel inputs of the Passport. These units have pass-through ports, so you connect the mic or instrument to the monitor, then connect the monitor to the Passport.

This way, each musician has what he really wants: a monitor that only plays him and nobody else, and he can turn the volume up or down as needed. His bandmates each have the same setup, so everybody can hear themselves as loudly as they need, and they can hear each other through the other people's monitors. It's almost like playing acoustically together in terms of the monitors.

And this way, you can focus your attention on making the house sound good, and let the musicians take care of all things relating to monitors.

It's not the cheapest setup, but it really works. I've done it. It makes everybody happy, which is something that never happens with the conventional practice of having one monitor mix for the entire band.

And, you don't need any adapters. Just use XLR cables or 1/4" instrument cables.

Hi,

When using a powered monitor, you would take the signal from the Stereo Out and send it into the Powered monitor speaker. From there, if you have multiple powered monitors you'll want to take the output from the first powered monitor and connect it to the input of the second. This is called "daisy chaining". Also, as CC mentioned since the monitors would need to be powered, they are each their own independent system so the impedance of the speaker would already be matched to work properly with the internal amplifier. I hope this helps.
