What kind of cable would I need to run a powered monitor with an XLR input from the stereo out on my Passport 500?

With thanks,
Mahavan

Well, it's complicated. The output from the amp is 1/8" stereo. The input for the powered monitor is XLR mono. This is not something you can walk into a store and buy off a shelf.

I'd recommend that instead, you go from a microphone or musical instrument into the XLR port on the powered monitor, and then use another XLR cable to go from the pass-through port on the powered monitor to one of the XLR ports on the Passport 500. This does imply getting one of these powered monitors for each musician.

While that costs money, the result is great. Each musician gets his own monitor and his own volume knob that he is in control of. He can hear himself exactly as he chooses to hear himself, and he can hear the rest of the band through the monitors used by the other musicians, as if they were playing together acoustically.

Everybody will like the result, including you, since you'll no longer have to mess with a monitor mix that somebody in the band won't like because he can't hear himself.

The Stereo Out on the Passports is an unbalanced stereo out (Tip = Left, Ring = Right, Sleeve = Common). Hopefully this helps you to determine what you need to connect to your powered monitor.

Sweet solution, Byron. I have rock and bluegrass band clients that will be tickled pink by this!

Hmm. I really should go back and look at my old posts...

Contrary to my earlier statement, I walked into a store and bought an adapter that had a 1/8" stereo plug at one end of an 18" or so cable connected to a box the size of a large pack of gum. The far end of it has a male XLR port (just like a microphone), and there's a volume knob on the side.

I just found the URL for it:

http://www.rapcohorizon.com/p-379-ltiglblox.aspx

The manufacturer is RapcoHorizon. The device is the LTIBLOX (Laptop Interface). Inexpensive and VERY useful.

Looks like they've added a ground lift since mine was built. Good idea to eliminate hum, though that hasn't been a problem for me so far for this usage.

I hope this helps.
