Hi to all,
I am considering buying a PRO 150 system to use it as a mobile PA unit for DJ-ing in small parties (usually no more than 50 people, in private houses or places). I have no intend to use it with instruments or even microphones, althought that might be interesting on some future occasions.

In parties, I play mostly soft jazz / soul for the diner part, and more funk/dance/house/pop for the dance floor. I am using a laptop with an external professional mixer that have 1/8" and 1/4" jack outputs.

Does it work great like this? How's the sound quality for this kind of use? Will it be powerful enough for the dance floor? Would you advise another product?

Thank you.
PS: sorry if this question was already asked somewhere, i did a quick search and found nothing.

Short answer: Yes - at least the Pro 150's predecessor was (PD 150). I don't have experience with the new version, though.

The Pro Deluxe 150 did a great job when I DJ'd my son's wedding last year. There were around 50-70 guests in a room that could have held 300. It was plenty loud and clear, even though I didn't even NEARLY have it cranked up all the way. I used a laptop with iTunes, but no other mixer.

Now, I wasn't running a subwoofer, though. The 150s don't have a subwoofer output, though the higher power ones (Pro 500, I think) do.

I think you'll be plenty happy with the 150 for what you want to use it for.

Another short answer: Yes. I've got a PRO 150 and I've used it to DJ. I also use the bigger and beefier PD250, which has been replaced by the PRO 300 as the middle powered and featured Passport. The PRO 150 is much easier to move around, and for some gigs, it is just right.

However, to limit overdriving the inputs and resulting distortion, the PRO 150 has lots of headroom built in to the inputs that the PD series did not. You may need to boost your input signal a bit above line to get the thump for dancing. Your idea to use a mixer between the laptop and PRO 150 will give you the strong signal you'll need to free up the PRO 150's 75W per channel for the dance portions of your gig.

You'll need to experiment with cables and inputs from mixer to PRO 150 as there are nuances to the connections and resulting gain of the various options to plug in.

For the background/dinner only gigs, you are fine with a simple 1/8 to 1/8 stereo cable from laptop to PRO 150 stereo in.

Hi, thanks for your messages it is now clearer for me.

My mixer does have 1/4" jack outputs at professional level +4dBu. So i believe it will be ok to use then with the line inputs of the Passport.

I don't intend to use the Passport directly linked to my laptop.

If you can swing it, the Passport 500 pro series would be good to fill a cafeteria size venue with good sound. Smaller units will not have the ability to project the bass well. You should take it out for a test drive to see what it sounds like. A happy audience is one that feels the music. Remember these Passports are for portabilty and economy, not for big venue gigs. If portaility is not an issue, you could venture into other PA systems that will give you a lot more sound with bigger PA speakers and subwofer.

Thanks for your message TTSC. I agree with you about the fact that the audiance need to feel the music, so a louder volume would be better.

But considering that actually, without having such kind of material, i am using a basic Hi-Fi amplifier with standard speakers... i just want to upgrade to a more professional system, that i can carry anywhere. And I'm not sure i need 500 Watts or even 300, because my parties are usually very small - 20 to 50 people in a living room or something... When it happen that I mix into clubs, the place is usually fully equiped with all i need, so i don't need the Passport for that purpose.

Also, the Passport 500 has 8 channels. In my case, i guess i would use only one of them...

I am looking after the Passport 150 mostly because it seems to be lightest portable professional system i have seen so far. And the price is quite good compared to some other PA systems. The fact that it is made by Fender, also makes me think about quality.

I'd like to test a passport 150 somewhere, but i'm living in France and they are quite hard to find. Most dealers don't have it for presentation.

So if they are more feedbacks about the Passport 150, i'm still interested.

Hi to all... again :)

I'm coming back after a long run of searching through the internet about comparable systems. It seems (on paper at least) that the Passport Pro 150 beats them all.

It's small-sized, light, powerful enough, well-made, and most of all... cheap ! All that coming from a renowned brand makes it a dream come true.

So i'm still wondering... what's the weakest point of this system? i can't believe i can get all that for the cheapest price i found for this kind of portable PA system.

Am I missing something?... thanks for your help !
