Hi, My passport 500 makes thumping noise if I hit the mic with my hand but no sounds comes out when speaking into the mic. I have traded out the mic and mic cable. Also I tried each of the four mic inputs.
Thanks

If sound is coming out of the Passport, it sounds like it may be a problem with your mic and/or cable. Please call Consumer Relations @ 480.596.7195 to describe your problem and they can help you to troubleshoot.

If you are getting sound when you hit the mic with your hand, but you can't hear a voice, then maybe you have turned on the "Pad" button (the white light) under that channel for a mic that is not "hot" enough to need the pad. That causes a 20 decibel drop in volume, so the mic is technically turned "on", but it is cranked so low only a hand slap will be audible, even if the "level" knob is cranked all the way up.

I actually use this as a "feature" to mute a mic if nobody is using it, if it doesn't already need the Pad to work.

I have a Shure headset radio mic that is hot enough to need the Pad. Everything else I plug in doesn't.

ContraCaller, I just looked; my Passport doesn't have a Pad button or a white light. It is an older model. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks!

What kind of mic are you using? If it is a condenser mic, you either need phantom power or a battery. Is the mic plugged into the XLR port or the 1/4" port? The 1/4" port expects a line level signal. Mics are much lower power than line level. To use the 1/4" jack, you need a preamplifier to bring the signal up to line level, or a different cable so you can use the XLR jack.

Hi ContraCaller,
Thanks for your help.
We have two of these Passports but only one is giving me the problem. So the setup is the same and has been for at least five years. We use a normal mic and cable with a three male tips on one end (I am not sure of the name of the plug) that plugs into the Passport. I can take the mic and cable from the Passport that is working fine and plug it into the problem Passport and not have sound. That's why I think that there is something wrong with the Passport. We have four mic inputs and none work. I do have a mic with a 1/4 tip (once again I don't know what's it called), I could try that mic to see if it works.
Thanks again for your help,
Dave

Dave,

Have you tried contacting Consumer Relations? They should be able to help you get your Passport back to working conditions. Also, what models of Passport do you have?
