Hi Ken

Unhappy with the available volume I am able to get from running my iPod into the stereo mini jack and the quality of the jack input (made of plastic and no retainer nut) I have decided to buy a professional media player instead that is equipped with balanced XLR left and right outputs but as the new Pro300 I am using doesn't have a pan feature, unlike the old PD models, how is plugging into 2 of the XLR inputs like to work....just two sets of mono? Will I loose all stereo imagery? Am I better of going into the L&R jacks of the stereo in? I really want to be able to use the XLR's to maximise available volume and to maintain the quality from the media player.
Have Fender trimmed to many corners on omitting the pan feature.....I think so. Panning is always very useful for positioning multiple instruments in the mix, with the new PRO's all instrument sit right in the middle of the mix using, and getting confused, in the same space.

I appreciate your response

Andy

Thanks for your reply. I am successfully using the Pro300 with the media player...a vast improvement on an iPod.

Over the years I have influenced a number of other soloists and duos to switch to the Passport systems and I DO know that many of them have an issue with their iPods volume output and therefore the available volume on the stereo input. In the USA this problem isn't the same as in the UK simply due to Apples having to conform to silly legislation about volume limitation, a typical euro optimised ipod will be about one third of the maximum output of a USA model and therein lies the problem. I'm sure when legislation over their reaches the same level of idiocy as over here this problem will become more evident to you.

The solution would of course be a hotter stereo input and an input gain control. If Fender were able to match that with pan controls on their inputs I'd say they would pretty much have the ultimate small portable pa. They are getting better all the time...and the new reverb is a huge improvement as I can now use it without the need for by reverb pedal...well done to fender on that score!

All the best

Andy

Ah, now that you mention that you are in the UK this makes more sense! We appreciate your feedback and will take this into consideration for future designs.

Hi Andy,

I apologize for the confusion, but my previous post was incorrect. Channels 1-4 are Mono, so inputting the L & R outputs from your media player into Channels 1 and 2 respectively will send the L&R signals to both speakers, thereby losing the stereo imaging. Channels 5-6 have an unbalanced 1/8" input, but the 1/4" inputs are balanced. Therefore, you should get a pair of XLR to TRS balanced cables and take the L output of your media player into the 1/4" L input of Channel 5 (or 6), and take the R output of the media player into the 1/4" R input of Channel 5 (or 6). This will result in stereo imaging of your media.

Don't worry about the confusion Byron...I kind of figured that one out. Can you assure me that the 1/4" stereo inputs are definitely balanced? I will have to make up new cables and I've already done this twice. It's brilliant news if they are but I would say that if that is the case Fender should definitely have made this known in the manual. I checked everything I could find on the internet to see if this was the case and couldn't get the schematics anywhere. I thought the only thing to do was dismantle the unit to check the inputs jacks. At the moment i have wired my xlr's to a mono 1/4" configuration....obviously not as good as stereo balanced.

I would appreciate you getting back to me after double checking that this is definitely case.

Many, many thanks for all your time

Andy

Hi Andy,

Yes, the 1/4" L & R inputs of channels 5-6 are balanced.
