I want to use headphones to monitor my Passport 300 from a room which is more-or-less audio-isolated from the speakers. I was hoping to plug the headphones into the stereo output jack, but that doesn't work, even with all volumes at full. Any suggestions?

What headphones are you using? Also, what are your settings? The stereo out is capable of driving headphones.

Two guesses:

1: Hmmm. If the Passport is in the same room as the speakers and you and your headphones are not, then what kind of cable are you using for your headphones? How long is it?

If I'm guessing right, then you want to have long speaker cables and a short headphone cable instead of the other way around.

2: The term "All volumes" is vague. The most important one is the one right next to that "Stereo Out" jack. Everything else controls volume to the speakers, not to the Stereo Out jack.

Passport and headphones are both in the control room and the headphone cables are 6-10 feet long. Speaker cables are about 40 feet. I get plenty of sound out of the speakers; it's just stereo out that I'm concerned about.

I've tried different head phones:
Sony MDR V150 Dynamic Stereo Headphones
Sony MDR NC7 Noise Cancelling

By "All volumes", I mean the larger knob near the top labelled "Volume", plus the 6 level knobs for the input channels, plus the level knob for the stereo out.

With the volumne knob and all 7 level knobs turned up, the headphones do produce a sound, but it is barely audible.

I took the unit back to the store and the salesperson said the unit was working properly and that I needed to put an amplifier between stereo out and the head phones. And he demonstrated that working. I just thought that was not right because the PP300 is an amplifier and I wasn't expecting to amplify it's headphone jack in order to hear it.

Can somebody just try their unit and report if they get an audible sound from a headphone plugged into the stereo out jack? Or can a Fender engineer chime in and tell me what I should expect?

Thanks, in advance

Hi,

Do you know what the impedance of your headphones are? If they are low impedance headphones it should work fine. If they are high impedance headphones, then yes a headphone amp will be required. Please let me know what impedance your headphones are if you could.

Thanks,
Ken

One set is 24 ohms, the other is 35 ohms. That seems relatively low-impedance to me. What do you think?

If the PP 300 should drive those headphones, is it possible to get some sort of statement from Fender so that the store that sold me the amp will understand?

We tested a 300 Pro here using program material as the input and tried a few pairs of headphones at the stereo out - Sony 7506 and Koss Portapro - and were able to get plenty of output. With your setup, what are your inputs to the Passport 300 Pro? Have you tried playing program material through channels 5-6 and listening to the stereo out to see what you get?

On this headphone topic with passport 500 I have the same issues in that I get VERY LITTLE VOLUME when using Grado SR80'S and 4 other types of phones. Yes im plugged in to the stereo out with levels all the way up on any channel and the stereo out volume knob all the way up,still very little volume. This can't be right. I've tried w/guitar,mike and ipod and all are very low volume with any headphones. What am I to try.

By the way the Grado SR80's are low impedance at 32 ohms so they should produce without having to run the channel and stereo volumes full up (10) I would expect?

I apologize in advance for asking something that should be obvious, but I can't know what you don't tell me.

1. You haven't said anything about the sound source.
2. You haven't said anything about the color of the LED at the top of any of the channels (black? green? amber? red?).
3. You haven't said anything about the LED stack for the Master Volume. (How loud do the LEDs say your signal is going to the speakers?)

In other words, you haven't told us anything about how loud your sound source is, or how much signal is going through the amp.

Note that the 1/8" stereo out on this unit ignores the Master Volume. It takes the signal from the 6 channels, combines them and runs them through the one output volume control next to the 1/8" stereo port. It provides a line level signal, which is appropriate for patching into another Passport on one of its stereo channels, or for powered speakers (like the external speakers you use with a computer).

I haven't tried mine with headphones because I use it as a line-level signal out to either another Passport, or to a Mackie SRM-150 powered monitor (daisy-chained to other powered monitors). The signal level might be a little low, but I'd expect it to be high enough for speakers, given that the powered speakers for computers are typically plugged into a headphone jack.

And to check another obvious thing, you are using the 1/8" stereo out jack and not the 1/4" mono sub out port or either of the two Pre-Out/ Power Amp In ports, right?
