We have been using the Passport Pro for about a year and so far it works well in small to medium rooms. At the last gig, we tried hooking in a 400 watt
powered sub woofer. We had that thing cranked but I could not tell any difference. My question: Is there certain criteria we must follow when using a sub?

Thanks,

Pat

Hi,

Hmm, what cable did you use? The sub out is simply a stereo sum from the pre-amp settings. A simple 1/4 TS cable into the sub should do the trick. You will have to use a powered sub which you did, and adjust the volume on the sub as well. I am not sure what went wrong in your case since as mentioned a simple 1/4" TS cable from the sub out into the sub in will do the trick. Let me know if you are encountering more issues.

Ken

Depends on the size of the room in which the sub is in.
Creating effective bass requires a sort of pressure (from sound waves, propagated by moving air). Essentially, the larger the room, the more difficult it is to reach the levels of smooth, deep bass you will find in a top-rate commercial concert hall or movie theater, which if indeed is world-class, can require peaks of clean bass or 115-121dB from your subwoofer(s) .

400 watts may sound like a lot but depending on how much air you have to move to get deep base, you may need more than 1 SW.

I have a 350W sub in my basement Home Theater and I could easily put in another one to get great sound in the whole room. The one SW I do have is 8' away from where I sit. On the other side of the room it is lacking though in adequate bass response. Many HT SW are in the 800W range these days.

Hmmm. I've been using the Passport for acoustic gigs and it's been great. I had a gig with a DJ and grabbed what I had: A Passport 500, a Passport 300 and a 300 watt bass guitar amp plugged into the subwoofer out port. It worked, but not enough thump.

So, I'm buying a Gemini GVX-SUB15P subwoofer that I hope does a better job. First, it is an actual subwoofer instead of a bass guitar amp. Second, it is 400 watts instead of 300 watts. Third, it's made by a company that is supposed to specialize in equipment for DJs. One would think it could make the DJ happy.

For the money I get for gigs, I can't justify spending $1k on a powered sub-woofer. The GVX-SUB18P (the next larger model) weighs over 100 pounds. The GVX-SUB15P is a more reasonable 65 pounds.

So, all choices are compromises. My hope is that it is similar in character with the Passports: Portable enough, inexpensive enough, but functional enough to make dancing fun.

Note: There are people out here who would probably like to see what Fender could come up with along the lines of a Passport Powered Subwoofer.
