Hi, I just rec'd my Passport 500 pro and set it up in the living room to test.
When the volume levels are set straight up at "12 o'clock" there is a considerable amount of white noise. I own a PD-250 also, and it's nowhere near that noisy at the same position, so I'm curious.

Also, is the stereo out the only monitor send? I figured they'd add at least another aux send or something as an improvement over the older models.

Hmm, I am curious. Is anything plugged in when you hear the white noise? Obviously white noise is better than hum, but the new Passports are by far the quietest Passport models we've designed so far that's why I am wondering.

And yes, the stereo out can be used as a monitor out. In our survey before the development started it seemed that the Aux Send was one of the least used features.

Thanks,
Ken

I used the 500 pro on 2 gigs this past weekend. After conferring with my bandmates, everyone agreed that the sound is a vast improvement over the PD-250. Mind you, we really like the sound of the 250! Both clubs were "packed to the gills" and the crowds extremely loud. I raised the speakers (physically) as high as the stands allowed, and there was no harshness when we ramped it up in the 2nd and 3rd sets. The dispersion on those little speaks is impressive, and it had balls without the piercing high end harsh crap.

I'm a singing drummer and used my vocal mic and mic'd the kick. Guitar dude sings and plugged directly into the 500 pro via an FX pod of sorts. Nice full tone all the way around. It made our duo sound very large.

I do wish there were more "outs" or "sends" so that when we add a singing keyboardist, he can have a monitor for keys and vocals. We are trying to figure out how to add more monitors by taking the stereo out, to a JBL wedge that has an XLR through that I can patch into. Sort of defeats the idea of consolidation. Just sayin...

Also, can that sub out be used for anything else? I don't need the lows and hate to see a perfectly good 1/4 in. jack go to waste!

MO - Your guitar "dude" was playing a regular electric guitar, not acoustic/electric? Did dthis sound good? I am trying to find out if this would be good for a fledgling rock band for my kid. I have heard you can't plug electric guitars into this...???

I have guitarists that use both electric and the acous/elec. Sometimes with a direct box, other times straight in. Sounds great.

I can no longer keep the Passport 500 pro.

The lack of monitor sends are really my only problem. There is only one monitor out, and it sends you the main mix with NO WAY to control what you hear.

For example: The guitarist/keys always get louder when they solo. While it might sound fine in the Main speakers, my monitor is SO LOUD that I have to turn it down. Problem is, you have to turn everything down, so now I can't hear my vocals! There is some crap I just don't need to hear in my monitor, and the Passport gives you NO WAY to take offending instruments out of the monitor mix.

I can't be the only one with this issue. If I'm missing something and there is an easy workaround, I'm wide open!

Sorry to hear that. The stereo out will give you exactly what's coming out through the speakers, so in theory if the guitars are too loud in the stereo out they will be too loud through the main speakers as well.

I understand that some people would like their own monitor mix, but during development we wanted to make the Passport an easy to use product. Most users of the Passport units have not used the Aux send feature in the past, as we did feature it on the older versions. It was one of the least used features used in our survey and we felt that we couldn't charge the customer for something they don't use.

In your case this obviously doesn't apply and my apologies for that. However, what you hear through the stereo outs is what you hear through the main speakers meaning if the guitars are too loud in the monitor they are most likely too loud in the main output as well.

Again, my apologies that the Passport unit didn't work out for you.

Ken
