Hello,

I have an older Passport 250 model (P/N:069-1002) and was wondering if I can add additional speakers to it? It looks like there are 2 speaker jacks for both right and left. Looking to add 2 additional monitor speakers in addition to the Fender speakers. Can I plug another 8 ohm speaker into each side of the amp....driving 4 total speakers? Or can I run the 2 Passport speakers off one side and run the 2 monitor speakers off the other side? Just wondering if this will bring the impedence down to an unacceptable level. I learned my lesson on impedence once in the past and would hate to fry the amp.

Thank you,
Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes, using 2 8 Ohm speakers with the Passport 250 speaker should not be a problem.

I just got an older Passport 250 model (P/N:069-2001) and would like to add two speakers. I do not see the additional speaker jacks you are talk about in your note. Can I just get a 1/4" splitter and go to two additional speakers? Alternatively run through the speaker out RCA's to powered speakers (not preferred).

Any insight would be helpful.

Hi,

The owner of the original post had a P-250 which offered 2 speaker jacks per output. You have a PD-250 which doesn't. In your case I cannot recommend using a splitter since you will be changing the impedance that is driving the power amp. The PD-250 is designed to drive two 8 Ohm speakers. If you're using a splitter to drive four 8 Ohm speaker the power amp is being driven with a 4 Ohm load per side which can damage the power amp.

You could however use the stereo out of the PD-250 to go into a power amp with connected speakers, powered speakers or a second Passport system. That would certainly work.

Hope this helps.

Thank you as the reply was very helpful. I guess I could use the stereo out to go right to powered speakers directly as well.

That's what I said. ;) Powered speakers, a second Passport, etc.

You're welcome, have fun!

Ken,
Sorry, I don't know very much about this stuff, and I was trying to follow the post but I thought I better just ask my own specific question. I have a Passport PD250, the one with only one speaker jack for the right and the left. I would like to add a monitor, could I use the "stereo out" and go to say a fender 1270P monitor, that has it's own power? Without blowing totally blowing up my PD250? Thanks.
Jon

Yes, you can use the Stereo out into a set of 1270P's, that would work fine.

Ken -

our band also has the older P-250 (or PD-25) with only one output jack for LEFT and one for RIGHT, but we'd like to add 2 powered KUSTOM KSC 10" 8 OHM speakers.

we tried using the RCA stereo outs and the speakers just don't get loud - no matter what we do, and these speakers can go QUITE LOUD.

could we connect the powered customs to the left /right jacks and put the fender speakers to the stereo out?

we used a splitter on the left jack and put the 2 fenders to that and then daisy chained the customs off the right jack - and noticed that it works - but according to this the impedence addition will/could create a problem?

what's our best solution?

thanks.

This seems to be the same question as posted separately as well. The same answer applies.

If your speakers are "8 OHM", then they are probably not "powered". Don't try to hook up additional unpowered speakers to your Passport. It won't sound better. It definitely won't sound louder. But it will probably burn out the amp.

The speakers described earlier in this post were powered speakers. Each speaker has a cable that plugs into AC power in order to drive the built-in amplifier in the speaker. That's what makes it a "powered" speaker. Each speaker has an "on/off" switch for its built-in amplifier. If your speakers don't have on/off switches, they are probably not "powered" speakers.

I would like to reply to the originator of this thread, Randy.

Randy, I have a pair of speakers that were designed for your P-250. They look like a P-250, speakers attached to a center tower, grey plastic, beautiful curves, but there is no amplifier inside the tower.

Let my mistake, I own a PD-250, be your treasure. Bruce@BruceRobinson.com.

My Passport has the connections for two sets of speakers but the Passport labeling (and manual) is a little confusing on how to connect speakers. The labeling on the Passport shows the two left most speaker plugs as "Left" and as "Main" and the two right most speaker plugs as "Right" and "Mon". The diagram for connections on page 14 of the manual shows only two speakers connected and shows them connected to the "Left" "Main" (beneath the "Left" "Send" connection) and the "Right" "Mon" (beneath the "Right" "Return" connection). Are the main speaker connections actually the extreme left and extreme right plugs even though the right connector would then seemingly be plugged into a "Mon" connection? Are the monitor connections then actually the inner two plugs even though the left monitor speaker would seemingly be plugged into a "Main" plug?

Also, my unit has been going into protect mode when I connect monitor speakers. Would connecting both main speakers into the connections labeled "Main" (the two left plugs) and the both monitor speakers into the connections labeled "Mon" (the two right plugs) cause this to happen?

If the speakers are connected properly, can 4 ohm speakers be used as monitor speakers?

Thanks!

See the bottom of the left column on page 7 of the owner's manual:

http://support.fender.com/manuals/pro_a ... manual.pdf

The two left plugs are the same wires. The two right plugs are the same wires.

If the "Mode" switch is set to "Stereo", then the two left plugs are both "Left" and the two right plugs are both "Right". If the Mode switch is set to "Mono", then the two left plugs are "Main" and the two right plugs are "Monitor".

I'm not sure about the right "ohms". Someone else can likely answer that better.
