I just purchased a Passport 500 but there is a problem with using it with an electric guitar.

I have tried both a Fender Strat and an acoustic with a Fishburn pickup and neither seem to work with the system. They just don't seem to produce any amplified sound.

The Passport itself works 100% with both a condenser and a dynamic mic. The MP3 input works. the only thing that doesn't work are the guitars.

Can anyone explain why and how to resolve this issue.

I know nothing about sound or PA systems, so any information is welcome.

Thanks

Robert

Hi Robert,

The 1/4" jacks are line input jacks not instrument jacks. Your electric guitar is a high impedance low level instrument and even if the line inputs in the Passport would have enough gain it would sound muddy and dull because of the impedance mismatch. The way to get this working and make it sound good on top of it would be to purchase a cheap passive DI box, you can get them for $30 or so, and plug your guitar into the Hi-Z input of the DI box and then the Lo-Z output of the DI box into the mic input using a XLR cable. That way you would have enough gain for the low level instrument too. It would make your guitar sound good and less noisy on top of it.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy your new Passport 500 Pro!

Ken
