I have tested the Passport Pro 500 a bit but I did not play with the recorder. My question: If you have multiple re-recorded songs on a USB storage device, can you easily access these songs? I don't think there is a display so how do you find the one you want?

Hi Pady,

The pre-recorded songs will be accessed in alpha-numerical order. This means that if you want to create a playlist of some sort you would have to simply rename your files either 01_xyz, 02_xyz, etc. or axyz, bxyz, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,
Thanks for your help. So, after the first one is done playing does it stop at the next song in order? Does it keep going if NOT stopped?

Thanks again!

Pady

Hi Pady,

No problem. I will try to help as much as time permits. :)

It will play just like a CD player meaning it will continue to play the next song in order without stopping.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,
So, unless you are keeping track, you never really know where you are? Is there any kind of track/song indicator?

Thanks.

Hi Pady,

No, there's no track indicator. The way I do this when playing pre-recorded material is print out a playlist and have it with me that way I would know where I am while listening to the song(s). Obviously, if you pause it or skip through songs you will need to listen to it in order to hear where you are. Think of it as an iPod Shuffle if you will (not sure if I can name an Apple product on our site :)).

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Pady,

You will need a 2GB flash drive in order to playback/ record approx. 3 hours of CD quality .wav files (16bit, 44.1kHz, stereo).

Thanks,
Ken

Hi,

Just got my Fender Passport 500Pro.

Whilst testing it before taking it out tonight it seemed to play some MP3 songs from a USB drive without any problem, but then not play others.

Does anyone know if MP3 have to be a certain bitrate or should it play all files?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

Here's the list of supported formats:

USB file format: FAT16, FAT32
MP3 bit rate: 8k-320Kbps, sample rate: 8K-48KHz, VBR is supported
WAV (PCM) Playback: 8/16bit, sample rate <=48KHz
WAV (PCM) Recording: 16bit, 44.1K sample rate, stereo

A few questions, are you sure that all files on your thumb drive are mp3? Maybe some are AAC or even protected files. What are the names of the files? Are there any special characters in them, etc? We have tested the functionality extensively and this is the first time I am hearing that some mp3 files couldn't be played. I want to make sure I understand everything you're doing.

Thanks,
Ken

Does the thumb drive need to be formatted in a special way and dedicated to use with the Passport, or can it have other stuff like documents on it?

Hi,

Yes, it should be FAT16 or FAT32 formatted, basically meaning Windows format. Please make sure not to format it NTFS (which is another Windows format), etc. since the drive cannot be read by the Passport if so.

You can have documents etc on your thumb drive, the Passport will scan through the drive and look for mp3 and wav files only.

Hope this helps!

Ken

Just a few more questions about the USB recording functionality:

a) what is the naming format for recorded WAV files?
b) is there a maximum size for the WAV files (i.e. does it stop recording at a specific GB size)?
c) how do you differentiate between the different recordings (i.e. does the WAV file store the recording date and time)?

This PA sound system with all its functionality sounds so incredible. I am definitely recommending the 500 PRO for our church. (My brother is the music teacher for his school and uses Passport for his concerts and loves it!!)

Thanks!!

Hi Bob,

To answer your questions.

a) what is the naming format for recorded WAV files?
Ken: The tracks are being named 500Pro Track1.wav, 500Pro Track2.wav, etc. You will then be able to simply drag them into your computer and rename them if you want. Track one is created once you hit record. When you stop recording and record a new track it will be automatically named 500Pro Track2.

b) is there a maximum size for the WAV files (i.e. does it stop recording at a specific GB size)?
Ken: The max recording time depends on the size of your flash drive. A 2GB flash drive for example will give you 3 hours of CD quality recording with the Passport 500 Pro.

c) how do you differentiate between the different recordings (i.e. does the WAV file store the recording date and time)?
Ken: You differentiate between the different recordings by the naming convention, but yes you could also use the date if you wanted to. I find the naming convention to be simpler though.

Glad you think the 500 Pro is a great product.

Thanks,
Ken
