Hi, I started a band with some of my friends and we're looking for a PA for band practice and small venues. We play Punk music and we're looking to amplify two guitar combo amps , a bass combo, vocals and a drum kit. We're on a pretty low budget and we're thinking about the Passport Conference. Would that suit our needs?

The Conference is designed mostly for a person talking at a conference. Not very full range. Not very loud. Very portable and useful for what it's designed for, but not really for a band. It has three channels that can take an XLR cable (normal for a microphone) or a 1/4" instrument cable, and one channel that can take one or two 1/4" instrument cables. The microphone would go into one of the three XLR inputs. The "Line Out" ports of your amps would plug into the 1/4" inputs. So, you'd max out the Conference with one microphone on the entire drum set.

The other models handle more inputs and have more watts to push the sound out, but they really are designed more to be clear and to be easy to use for mixing. Not so much for painfully loud, crushing sound. It just depends on what you are expecting to get out of it.

The Event might work for you, if you are mostly wanting it for practice, and maybe for a small venue. The Venue might work for you in a wider range of situations, mostly because of the power, but also because with more inputs, your band might grow a bit over time. You might, for instance, eventually want to mic the drums with multiple microphones. You'll need an input channel for each mic.

But if you really want it just to mix sound for your practices, and you are willing to replace it when you outgrow it, and maybe you aren't all that sure the band has legs and will survive long enough for a bigger investment, you might actually enjoy the Conference. It's all dependent upon the details of your expectations.
