For starters, I have a Rumble v3 500 combo on top of a Rumble v3 210 extension cab. It's a beautiful sounding rig. And it looks, at least to me, as good as it sounds.
Image

My rig consists of the Rumble gear, a Fender single button footswitch for the OD circuit, and then a Digitech BP-50 multi effects processor, with a Moog EP-3 Expression Pedal.

Cables from the Rumble to the pedal are Fender Performance Series 10 footer, and from the pedal to my bass is a Fender Custom Shop 20 footer.

My Basses are a 1993 Ibanez SR500 with EMG pickups, and a 2002 Ibanez SR480 dead stock.

Now to my question.

I get a quiet, but constantly audible white noise through the speakers, it is steady and seems to mimic the cooling fan in the amp head section itself, that gets notably louder when the extension cab is plugged in, but then again doubling speaker surface will do that right?

I have tested it out, and with the Rumble 500 itself, nothing at all plugged in, it is there. Plug in the footswitch, no change, it's there, barely audible but it's there.

Plug in the 210 cab (Using a LiveWire 1/4" to Speakon speaker cable), gets louder, still pretty low, but there.

Plug in instrument cable, noise goes up a minor tick.
Plug in effects pedal, noise goes up another minor tick.
Plug in instrument, noise goes up another tick. (I should have noted already, the amp is powered OFF whenever I plug / unplug anything...).

I don't know for sure, I never noticed it before adding the 210 cab, but the music room / where I practice, my head is typically immediately under the HVAC vent for the room, and the whooshing of the heater / AC is enough to overcome this sound except at higher output. (Main turned up).

I am wondering if this is normal, or if there is something wrong with my Rumble 500.

I have a friend / colleague with a Markbass 210 combo that does the same thing, but something in my gut tells me this isn't right.

Yes a bit operational background noise is normal.

Thanks Linin,

And yes, you should recognize that stack from the "other" forum you know me from... :-)

I wanted to come somewhere and ask. It was never all that noticeable with just the Rumble 500, but with the weather at a point with no AC or heat running, and the 210 plugged in, the white noise is thwacking at a nerve on me... I figured it was normal, but I guess the OCD part of me needed to be sure.

Worry not, Dave. Things are very slow here at the Fender Forums. Especially on the bass side of things.

That's all right by me... I came here to avoid the "Thou shalt run nothing but Ampeg, or this boutique amp or that" crowd... I wanted good useful info on my gear...

Still itching for that Affinity Jazz, budget still not playing nice enough to give me the room... Maybe I can do a GoFundMe or something... :-)

There are quite a few very knowledgeable experts here on the Fender Forums both in terms of electronic expertise along with some very sharp collectors of vintage Fender Basses & tube amps.

Very few Rumble owners though. Paul owns a Rumble 350 combo. modwiz and I both own Rumble 350 heads. Steve (affprod) owns an original first generation Rumble 100 1x15 combo, but also a full Super Bassman rig. That's about it. There have been a few others that have come and gone.

Although I am not a technician, I do try to keep up with all things Rumble, and maintain some level of expertise.

Well, we certainly appreciate your expertise and help on Talkbass! Too bad there isn't more Rumble goodness happening here though...

Okay this MUST be a power related issue. I played last night, probably at least a half hour. Hard to say for sure. I typically use the stopwatch on my phone to time myself, but my battery died last night... So I am guessing... Anyway I digress...

I have been running the amp, and the Digitech pedal off of an older Ace Hardware surge supressor / power strip. I eliminated the strip and plugged directly into wall power, and the white noise nearly disappeared at all but the loudest volumes. Swapped in a newer power strip / surge supressor, again noise almost non existent, put the original supressor back in place, noise came back.

Interesting that one surge suppressor would cause that noise. I guess it's always helpful to remember that ANY piece of gear in your "chain" can be the one causing your issues.
