Its my first post, so be gentle....
I use a Rumble 350 combo as my current rig, but I'm really interested in the new V3 Rumble series. The question I'm struggling to answer is do I go bigger with the Rumble 500 (which from what I understand is that the 500 combo alone only puts out 350 watts) or would the Rumble 200 be enough for what I need. Right now I currently gig around once a month with 2 different bands. Both of which I use the amp gain, along with the Boss ODB-3 and the EH Big Muff Pi. (We like it dirty around here) Rarely do I push my 350s volume past 7, so I feel the 200 might do the trick. Or do I lose some low end pushing the 200 compared to gently rocking the 500.

Any opinions are welcome

Welcome to the Fender Forums, mavmcgee. Great first post and excellent question.

I also have a Rumble 350, but it's a head on top of a pair of stacked Rumble 112 Neo cabs. I like my sound squeaky clean most of the time, but will kick in the Overdrive for effect when needed. The Rumble 350 combo is an excellent design with the cabinet very similar to the famous SWR Redhead that was the progenitor of the high wattage 2x10 combo.

Make no mistake that if you're running your 350 at '7', or about 3 o'clock on the volume knob, you are using every bit of your Rumble's 370 watts. That's right 370 watts. So you can forget the Rumble 200.

There is a lot to like about the V3 Rumble 500 combo especially it's expandability with a powered extension speaker output jack. Fender has just come out with a matching Rumble 210 cabinet that will give you a total of 4 identical 10" Eminence woofers and matching pair of compression tweeters. All in a diagonally staggered vertical array. That will move twice as much air as your 350 and bump the total wattage up to the full 500. That'll give you a big increase in SPL. $900 shipped. For maximum SPL go for the Rumble 500 head and a pair of Rumble 410 cabinets for $1,200. You would have to spend two or three times that amount to get an equal rig from other brands and still not have better sound quality. Different, yes, but better? NO!

Linnin, thanks a bunch! I'll definitely hold out for the 500. At this point I'm all about portability, so the 500 combo would suit me better. (And my wallet lol) In my main band I compete with 2 guitarists, both play through Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. So yes, I guess it would make more sense to go bigger just to have the option of adding an extra cab if needed. Great insight, and thanks again

Side note but an important one: A given volume knob position does not determine output power. It's just a gain control.

If those stomp boxes are distortion/fuzz units, might want to consider going with a cab that does a more-efficient job of reproducing that frequency range at live performance levels. I'm thinking a cab with a 6" midrange driver (or two).

Otherwise I'd agree with Linnin on the idea of separates, and on the idea of matched cabs if you're going to go with a pair.

Add together the watts of the guitar players' amps and multiply by 2. Usually comes out pretty close to what you need.

AND
one thing you can always do is run BOTH combos together!
 heh heh heh
Just use an instrument cable to go from the effects send on your new Rumble 500 into the effects return on you Rumble 350. Plug your bass into the Rumble 500's input and set your tone and volume. The 350 has to be turned on also. It will simply amplify your tone settings and pre-amped signal from the 500. Set your volume accordingly. That'll put some pucker in their pants!

I have the Rumble 350 combo as well and I thought it was actually over 400 watts, according to that schematic? It doesn't matter, because that amp always seem to have some "oomph" to it. Even though I'm using a 1000 watt amp now, I still will stand by it for my purposes, anyhow. I'd hold out for the 500 one as well, if I was to get a new Rumble amp. Maybe they should come out with a Rumble 1000? That would be amusing! Then you can laugh at your puny guitarist's amps and drown them out in a bass fury.

When it comes to bass amplifier power I go by the old muscle car adage regarding horsepower. If some is good, more is better.

That's true. I seriously doubt I'll ever go full bore on the Orange Terror Bass 1000 (I never did with the Rumble 350,) but it's good to know I have it if I was in a situation where I needed that much headroom. The only reason I even got the amp was it was discounted to a third of it's original price. I just couldn't pass that up. Besides, you can never have enough amps, in case you need a back up, or whatever.

I have an original version of the SWR Red Head combo which is the 240 watt version. I use it in conjunction with a 210+115 extension cabinet. In the most recent band I was in, a loud punk outfit, I pushed it just to the point of breakup and it was just loud enough. I was wishing for a bit more power sometimes as I noticed my EQ adjustability was slightly diminished at that volume.

I use to have that problem with an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro sometimes, and then the transformer fried on it. That was an expensive stink to smell. It was a US made one I bought new in the mid-90's because the Fender BXR300C combo amp I had wasn't cutting it, either. They sounded good, but when you have loud guitars to contend with, it can get problematic. I should have just kept my Peavey Databass combo I got rid of for the Fender. It didn't sound as good, but it was f'n loud.

At one point I was running an Ampeg PF500 as a slave amp to power the extension cabinet and that worked quite well providing me with copious amounts of thump and tons of EQ flexibility. Trouble was the Ampeg pooched after less than 10 hours. They fixed it under warranty but I sold it immediately after I got it back. Unreliable gear I do not need.

Yeah, I read a bunch of horror stories about that amp having issues. That certainly scared me from that amp, especially when it's the same problems repeatedly. That's why I felt safe when I originally bought that Rumble 350 combo a few years ago. I found very little complaints, especially on this forum (I figured if there was any problems, they'd certainly would have been posted here,) so I thought it was a good gamble. It was. I still have it and it still works.

1000 watt Terror - that is quite a back up amp!

It's actually my main amp at the moment, but yeah, that would be one hell of a back up.
