Just bought a used Pro 400, my first bass amp. Much more amp than I need, but seemed like the thing to do to go with my American Standard P Bass. My question is is there any advantage to the plush covering, rather than tolex?

Not really. The black Ozite carpeting became fashionable in the 1980's (I think) and if I am not mistaken we have David Eden to blame for that, or maybe it was SWR. Anyway the stuff came to be called 'rat fur'.

Tolex will tear if you are careless how you treat your equipment, but at least it can be cleaned and spiffed up.

There is no reason not to recover your amp in Tolex if that's what you want. Plus there are a lot of very attractive colors/types available nowadays besides basic black.

Nice link! As much as I hate it our guitarist and I are actually contemplating recovering our amps to fit with the new band's image and color scheme. (I'm really gonna miss the blonde if it goes. :/ ) However, I found 3 awesome options on this list! That Python Snakeskin in Burgundy is too much!

 ACK!

I would never ditch that beautiful Blonde & Oxblood for anybody. Even though the burgundy snakeskin is pretty spiffy. The oxblood grill cloth might work with that, but if not wheat surely will.

I know. I'm not thrilled about it. The Blonde/Oxblood is absolutely gorgeous. Especially under the lights. Super classy. However, with this band we're really trying to mix the old school look of the matching stage clothes and even carry it over to the amps and instruments eventually. Our guitarist is going to be upgrading from his Epiphone swingster (basically an epi with Gretsch style pups) to either a US Gretsch Setzer or Tenessee Rose in a Red or Black. I haven't been able to bond with my 55's Soft V neck so I will finally be taking a plunge on a Custom Shop 51 built for me with the U shaped neck in a trans Crimson. Right now I've got the blonde amps, and he plays a Fender tweed. So we were thinking of bringing the amps into it too at some point.

Yeah, "rat fur." I use to have a couple of Carvin cabs that had that crap. You gotta love those grand ol' times of the late 80's/early 90's when that was prevalent. :P One thing I know for sure is that cats love the stuff. :P

Hey, I might still cover my Rumble 350 combo in red shag carpeting, that I once mentioned here many moons ago. :P I still have a couple of years left on the warranty before I mess with anything on that amp, though.

Yes!

It makes me want to grow some mutton chop sideburns and my hair down to my waist and blasting out "I'm Your Captain/Closer To My Home" on some battered P-Bass with a feathered roach clip dangling off the head stock. :P Actually, to be accurate, it would have to be "Run The The Jungle" or "Suzi Q" since CCR had the endorsement.

By the way, I actually did grow my hair down to my waist for a few years, but it started getting caught in the car door and was a pain in the $@!, so I chopped it. It was one of my "social experiments" anyhow. :P

There wasn't much played through the Kustoms that didn't sound good. The Kustom Amps did there part, anyway.

I'd love to pair up those cabs with my Terror Bass 1000. I might have to upgrade the speakers (wouldn't want to risk blowing them up by accidentally getting too overzealous with the volume knob on a whim :P,) though. I'm not sure what the power rating was for the speakers in those old cabs, even though that head was 250 watts. I've heard the actual power rating was half of the model number of the Kustoms. Still, not too shabby for the time period, and I'll bet it still cranked, especially with all of those speakers.

By the way, speaking of artist instrument models, Fender should make a Mel Schacher Jazz Bass.

Image

It looks like he has a huge humbucker on it instead of two single coils. I wonder if that was a custom job he had done himself, or he was able to get that done from Fender?
