It doesn't hurt either, I just like 2X12 configurations.

You know you really want an 8 x 12" configuration, cranked to max, so the dogs run under the bed and don't come out for a week. :P

And least we not forget, peel paint off the walls, as well. That's a Marshall Stack there. 2 4X12. From The Lord of Loud!

It really does have a pounding, deep bass sound with 500 watts. Ampeg is still putting out a decent cab. Eminence 12's. I can see where some may like it @ 8 ohms, in place of @ 4 ohms, if they want to use another configuration cab with the 2X12. But it's perfect for playing at home, and just like the power sound I get from it. Like I must've said too, the USA GL Jazz roars through this setup.

I'd say a 2 x 12" cab with 500 watts is quite a capable rig, playing at home or on stage. By the way, you remember that band that I had seen recently with the bassist with the Ampeg that had a wall of sound going on? Come to find out he was actually using an SVT 3 Pro instead of a SVT 7 Pro (which I thought could have been the amp, but wasn't sure) and an Ampeg 4 x 10" cab. I'm assuming the cab is one of those 4 ohm ones, since that amp is 450 watts into 4 ohms, and 275 watts into 8 ohms. That was actually the same amp I use to have (not the cab, though) when I was in Florida. I know PA carries a lot of the low end, but I was standing in front of the stage where his stack was and I could tell it was putting out some bass. Personally, if I would get another Ampeg, I'd still go with an SVT 7 Pro or Portaflex 800, just to be on the safe side. :P

The 410 Ampeg may have been the SVT-410HLF. A 4 ohm, 500 watt, RMS. 1,000 Watts peak.

I have a feeling that's exactly what it was.

They usually are. I liked the cabs I had, but they were just to tough to move around at the time. Now it wouldn't be a moved cab, and I'm liking the 2X12 over the 410.

Yeah, 4 x 10" cabs can be on the heavy side. I almost got one at the time that I wound up getting the 18" cab instead. Sometimes, I wished I went with the 4 x 10" so I wouldn't have had to get that additional cab, but then again, I like the idea of big speakers, so I probably would have regretted that, too.

To be honest, I've only played through a few 4 x 10" cabs in my time. Two were aluminum cone Hartke cabs stacked together, another paper cone Hartke cab hooked up to a Hartke HA3500 head in a store, and an Aguilar cab with an Aguilar DB751 head (Jack Casady uses one of those) that was in a NYC rehearsal studio. My experience is pretty limited with that configuration, although I will admit I did like the sound of the aluminum cone Hartkes. I'm not sure if it's something I'd want to get or not down the road, though.

My 2X12 cab is close to some 410 cabs. It's 66 pounds, but some of that has to do with heavy wood used. The 12's aren't Neo's either.

It's a tough call to say you could've done better with a 410 cab over your18, when you like big speakers. Big speakers are cool, I just prefer 12's. Also, I'm not using my amp for stage performing like you do, so smaller size speakers work fine. My volumes are considerably less in the small room I play in.

I guess it's all also trial and error. Maybe certain speaker configurations work better for different rooms and/or purposes. The only problem I've ever had with the 18" Celestion is I had to keep it at a lower volume and it seems to work and sound better when it's louder. At least the 2 x 10" cab helps.

I believe the 18" wants to be played loud. The 15" some times needs volume to sound more clear, and fully function. The 18, as far as I know, does need volume to sound more clear, and fully function.

Maybe it has to do with the size of the speakers. Some sort of physics involved with that equation.

I really think it's because everything is bigger on them, and they require more power, and volume to move the air for the sounds. A lot of material to get moving.

That would make sense.
