As much as I liked the Super Bassman, I'm getting great Fender head sounds from the Bassman 500. This Bassman 500 really is something. I don't worry about tube issues, 17 pounds in place of 65 pounds, and at about half the price. Higher watts too, 350 @ 8 ohms, and 500 @ 4 ohms.

That's really the thing. You are getting the same preamp, it's just the power section is different. Personally, I've gotten good results from all kinds of amps, whether they be solid state, tube, or both, so I'm not too picky about that. I think speakers also play a roll in it, besides the instrument itself. You could have an all tube amp, and it could still sound like arse if the other components aren't stacking up. I don't think anything is written in stone. It's really up to you what you like, I think.

Absolutely right Paul. Some heads match up better with certain cabs. And like you just said too, speakers are in the mix to somewhat complicate things.
Combos may be the easiest solution for some players. Hopefully the company that manufactures a Combo, matches up everything to have it in it's package.
I wasn't too thrilled with Hartke heads, matching with Hartke Cabs. But that's just me. I obviously do like Fender heads, with Fender cabs. Ampeg cabs do seem to play well with other brand heads from what I've had. TC Electronic, GK, Fender, Ampeg, and some Hartke heads sounded fine through the bigger Ampeg cabs I recently had. I'll give the devil his due, Ampeg cabs do work well. Fender's too.

I never had too much experience playing on the Hartke stuff, other than using their original aluminum 4 x 10" cabs, with a Gallien Kruger head, in NYC, and I did play through a HA7000 (one of their first 700 watt/350 x 2 stereo heads they came out with,) and tried out a HA3500 head through one of their VX paper cone cabs in a music shop, where I got my Peavey bass.

I liked what I heard, but I never pursued anything to purchase. I did have one of those cheesy 20 watt practice amps they had (with the paper speaker, not aluminum) for awhile, but then it started having issues and I donated it. I think there was something wrong with the input jack, because it kept either shorting out, or distorting. That probably is what turned me off to looking into the brand that much.

It seems like Ampeg cabs are pretty well made, so that's probably why they work well with other amps, or at least my way of thinking. The only Ampeg that I've ever played though, that I remember, is one of those 2 x 15" and 2 x 10" Isovent cabs. That thing was pretty friggin' killer! I'll bet it would sound amazing with the Orange, but they haven't made those since the 90's, I think. There might be some on the used market, somewhere.

I'll admit, 2X15 cabs are solid.

Yeah, this one definitely was. The great thing about it was it was about as compact as a cab with a single 15" and 2 x 10"s, because the second 15" was rear firing, lined up with the other 15". The 10"s were also set in on a slight angle, so they were meant to be towards ear level. I don't recall, but I think the 15"s might have been set in at an angle, too.

It wasn't a huge cab, but had a massive sound to it. I'm probably pretty sure that I could even manage to get it upstairs around the narrow corner in my rehearsal room, sans factoring in the weight. I'm sure it was heavy with all the speakers in it, but I'm not sure. I never lifted one up, just played through it a couple of times, in a shop, and some rehearsal place that I tried out with a band in back in the 90's.

I have to say, if I could, I wouldn't hesitate to get one. I might change the speakers to maybe Celestions, because I like those, plus they'd have a higher wattage rating with them. I think the original cab might have been 400 or 600 watts at 4 ohms, so that might be risky, especially being over 20 years old, with my amp. That's of course, if they are the original ones installed.

I liked the 2X15 cabs in the late 60's, early 70's of the Fender Bassman's, the Sunns, and of course the Kustoms. They were very simple, and up front. The speakers were out standing for them in 15's.

Oh yeah, I think they were pretty well designed, especially if you can find them kicking around today. Then there are certain speakers that will make a difference, too. You had the JBL's and Celestions, plus whatever else that made the mark.

Altec Lansings, ElectroVoice SRO, and Jensen, were the heavy hitters back then along with the JBL, and Celestion you mentioned. I don't recall about the time Eminence became as popular as they are today. Eminence does make a pretty darn good speaker. Even if I had the cash, and or wanted to change from the 15" Neo to a JBL, I think I'd leave the Eminence 15" Neo intact.

I'm not even sure if JBL even still does speakers catered to amp cabs. I know they have the PA and stereo stuff.

No, I don't see listings for them on the JBL.com site. That's a shame.

Yeah,....... JBL's were almost a sought out standard to have in your cab. They were somewhat of a middle priced speaker. Higher priced than Jensen, yet lower priced than Altec Lansing, EV SRO, Celestion. A little lower in price, by but not by that much.

There's an EV Force 10 speaker that came stock in the 1982 Fender Super Champ I have. Apparently, it was part of some upgrade optional thing for the amp that was offered by Fender at the time.

I didn't buy the amp, but my girlfriend's mother's husband bought it new, so he was the original owner. He pretty much gave it to us, since it was just sitting in their finished basement and not being used, with a bunch of other stuff they had.

It's actually a 10" 150 watt PA speaker which has a hell of a lot of headroom to it, since the amp is only 18 watts, albeit all tube. I've never cranked it loud enough to where it goes into overdrive (too loud,) but it does come with a second overdrive channel to it. You have to pull on a knob to switch it over, unless you have a foot switch, which we don't.

I've actually played bass through it, as well, but it will distort if you turn it up. The amp's enclosure is a bit too small for bass frequencies, even though the speaker can handle it.

Electro Voice speakers were really something. I always had the Altec Lansings at the top of my list. And never could afford them.

I don't even think they make them anymore, do they?
