Fender is going in the right direction with the upcoming Fender Bassman 500.
It combines that magical Fender tone stack, a tube preamp and cool, clean, reliable class-D power with a killer price.

You know, they could have come out with this a few years ago and I would have snatched that right up, but nooooo, they had to wait until now and I have just bought a new rig, plus still have that Rumble 350 combo. :P Well, maybe I'll win the lotto, pay off the debt on the gear I've bought in the past couple of years and find some excuse to pick one up. A back up for a back up amp? :P

Well, it is nicely priced. You don't need to win the lotto to buy this.
The Fender site is showing $799.99. I'm guessing this is MSRP -- which means the street price will be lower. That's pretty amazing!

Yeah, that's not too shabby.

I agree it's a good idea. My only concern would be where the power module is mounted, and what cooling provisions are being made for it. From a thermal perspective, let's hope it's mounted in the bottom of the enclosure, in a metal sub-frame, with a small fan (or fans) cooling it.

Class D amps run incredibly cool. I can pretty much guarantee that this amp will not have thermal problems.

I have an Orange Terror Bass 1000 that's 1000 watts class D power amp with two tubes for the pre (pretty much probably the same set up, I bet) and that seems to run pretty cool, as well.

$799. Is the street price. I think Fender suspended the MSRP, for the actual street price. Probably part of the anticipated Fender Direct Purchase Program.

That's the price at Sam Ash, too. Since when did Fender start selling direct anyhow? During last Fall? It was a long time since I've even been on the site, since before they even changed it.

It's a common misconception that Class D runs cool. It doesn't -- it just runs less hot than linear designs. Its heat still needs to be gotten rid of somehow via sinking, convection, or fan, or some combination of those. This is especially true when the module is located in the same box where tubes are running. Even more of a concern in hot environments where just the ambient air temp approaches the design limit for a Class D module. Also you want to leave a safety margin at all times, not just for per-job reliability but also for longevity. Still interested in knowing exactly how Fender executed this design.

craig.p, I'm an electrical engineer and I disagree with your claims.

It's a fact that class D runs very cool. Unlike conventional amps, it is extremely efficient.
The heat given off from class D amps is a small fraction of the heat given off by its class A, AB and B counterparts.
The power-controlling components of a class-D amp do not operate in the linear range where they must dissipate energy. They are full-on (almost no voltage drop) or full-off (no-current). Dissipated power is calculated from voltage across the device times current through the device (E*I). Because E stays close to zero when I is high and I is close to zero when E is high, in all cases, the dissipated power can be shown to be magnitudes less than the delivered power. In class A, AB and B devices, the dissipated power if often on the same order as the delivered power. It can even exceed the delivered power.

Take a look at this Crown XLS1500 1500-watt amp. Those two little heat sinks is all that is required to deliver 1500 watts! And they still don't get very hot. A class A or B amplifier running 1500 watts with those heat sinks would smoke in seconds.
Image

A 500-watt class D amp would likely need heat sinks that are one-third the size of those pictured. Each of the two 12AX7 tubes used in the Fender amp dissipate less than two watts which is trivial.

Since we're offering backgrounds here, I graduated top in my tech school, specializing in analog and RF design, including high-power audio amplification. Held an FCC Radiotelephone First Class for many years. Built my first tube amp (quad 6L6) in 1969 and have built dozens since. Been doing sound reinforcement since '69, cut my teeth on Altec Voice of the Theater boxes and BGW arc welders posing as audio power amps. I've been the go-to guy for audio in every band I've ever joined or formed. Plenty more, but who wants to be boring.

With that out of the way, I disagree with nothing you've said. It's all known fact in the audio world. If you will read my post with a little more care, you might get the point I believe I clearly made: that Class D, regardless of how little heat it puts out, does put out heat, can succumb to its thermal surroundings, and -- depending on where they're located relative to the Class D board -- tubes don't help matters. Some measures have to be taken. My question is, what are the measures taken in this model. You can't just say, "Oh, it's Class D, so we can stick this module anywhere." The thermal concerns are no less-stringent; they're just on a smaller scale. But they do exist, and responsible engineering practice demands they be taken into account, starting with board placements. I would like to know how this was done in the 500 model.

I've just received this information from Fender. The Bassman 500 does indeed utilize the very same ICEPower module as the Fender Rumble 500. The front end is, of course, the same as the Super Bassman/100t. It is being manufactured at Fender's Ensenada, Mexico facility where the Super Bassman & 100t are also built. 8)

So basically it's the bastard love child of the Bassman and Rumble? :P That's pretty cool, actually. Best of both worlds there. I just wish they put that out a few years earlier, but such as life.
