I picked up a new Fender Rumble 500 head (Sweetwater) and (2) used Bassman Neo 410 cabs (from different Guitar Centers). Finally got to give them a good test at a semi-outdoor rehearsal (open garage). Guitarist is running a Carvin V3M 100w tube amp with a 212 cab. Drummer is not mic'd, singer thru PA. We have an outdoor gig mid July, and I'd like to be ready gear wise, so I figure this is a good time to test out the head and the used cabs.

The only effect I am running is a Markbass Compressore.

So I dial up the gain to about 9 o'clock and master to noon, and one of the 410s sounds like its farting out or something, or may be damaged? So I disconnect the one that is giving me problems, and run on one cab. When I try to push it a little more, it seems to be farting out also, so I back off on the gain and a little on the volume.

I have bass set to around 10:30, low mids at noon, high mids around 1:30, and treble around 1:30. Gain is now turned off and I am just running master around 11 o'clock. Cab horn dial is set about half way on.

We will be able to mic and/or di my gear for the outdoor gig, but I was interested in testing to see what my rig would do without pa support.

Is there something I am doing wrong (setting wise), or is it likely that I do have cab problems? If it is cab problems, there is a speaker repair shop near me I can take it to (http://www.sliceinc.com), or should I look into Fender Neo speakers for replacement?

Any and all comments and help appreciated! Thanks!

Wow, Ed, that is distressing to say the least! Especially since you had such high hopes with the neos, and rightly so. You've been playing this set up all along at lower volumes with no problems, and the sound was/is good? Is that correct?

Check the cabs as follows:

1. Do the 9V battery test on each cab separately. Connect one end of the speaker cable to the cab, and with the other end, briefly touch the phone plug's tip to battery positive and its sleeve to battery negative, and verify that all 4 drivers move out, not in. You'll need a strong flashlight to see the cones past the grille cloth. Or pull the grille if you can. Don't leave the battery connected for more than a second at a time because this load is essentially a dead short from the battery's perspective.

2. Check the cones for creasing. It typically shows up as a faint, often ragged line running around the outer circumference of the driver(s) just inside the outer suspension. You may need a flashlight to spot the line because it's sometimes non-obvious.

Now start with a good baseline on the amp and instrument:

1. Contour disabled.

2. Vintage disabled.

3. Bright disabled.

4. All tone controls at noon (flat).

5. Overdrive disabled.

6. Master up almost full - say 3:00 or thereabouts.

7. Gain full CCW (off) to start with, and use this control exclusively for volume adjustments as you proceed.

8. If it's an active bass, switch it to passive and run the volume and tone wide open. (If you really feel the need to run active, leave the tone controls centered [flat] and run the volume control so the output of the instrument is no higher than it is when in passive mode.)

Never mind the sucky tone. This is just a test to get you to a sane starting point.

Come back and let us know the results.
