Hey all-

I have all the bass gear I need for our large club and outdoor shows, but we also do small rooms (jazz clubs, ballroom dance shows, etc) where the band will basically play at rehearsal volumes. For these I don't need to lug around such heavy gear only to have it at volume setting 1.5. Looking for suggestions for small room bass amp that has a direct out for the PA to mix sound (but the DO doesn't bypass the amp speaker when connected so I can use the amp for stage monitor). Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. You may want to look into A Fender Rumble 100, 200, or 500 Combo. The third generation Rumbles are very well designed, and are worth checking out. Light in weight, but made with a solid wood cab. The internal heads are very good also.

Hi Mark!
I read your woes with a used first generation Rumble 100 2x10 combo that had been jury rigged to defeat the speakers when the DI was used just like a headphone out. That's a pity. A good technician could easily sort that out for you, but I'd dump it in favor of today's version 3 D-Class Rumbles. The new V3 Rumble 100 combo { 1x12: just 22 lbs. and a footprint that's about 15" square} is getting a lot of love. You may want the Rumble 200 combo {1x15} for your band. You really need to audition them personally, but they are selling faster than the proverbial hotcakes of yore. No, they don't cut out when you DI to the board. Yes, they'd make a fine stage bass monitor for the entire band.
Pop on over to the Fender Rumble Club to see what madness those crazy bass players are cooking up now! http://www.talkbass.com/threads/fender-rumble-club.970397/page-43#post-15949925

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the old Rumble 100, even if the DI didn't bypass the cab speakers, is still bigger than necessary for these small venues.

Don't make the mistake of undersizing this type of application. Many times, "rehearsal volume" can be as loud or louder than the volume you'd play at when you're going through a PA. How loud the band normally is at rehearsal should play a part in what you choose, then add at least a 50% margin because people suck up bass like a sponge.

Unless you're playing granola music to aging hippies drinking ten dollar organic coffees in a room that seats 40 tops, A 1x12 combo is a total non-starter. This does not sound like your plan.

Also, I try to avoid combos whenever I can. First reason is the amp section's always getting hammered by vibration. With separates you can isolate. Second: If the amp section goes and the combo's still under warranty, do you really want to ship the entire combo back? It's easier/cheaper to return a head (and use the cab with a different amp while you're waiting for the head to come back). I know C____n will often let you pull the head and ship just that, and M_____ss won't, but I'm not sure about Fender's policy. Third, you can't upgrade a combo with a better cab or a better head down the road; you're locked in.

My advice is a Rumble head (previous generation 350 or current generation 200 are about 300 USD at Sweetwater), and a Rumble 115 cab, also about 300 USD at Sweetwater. The cab's internal volume is pretty close to optimal, the porting looks on target, and the thing's made of ply, not MDF or other compressed and heavy material. Casters included, too. If I were in the market for another "value" 1x15, this one would be a top contender.

LMFAO and a total +1000!

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Might help to know what your gig rig is now. It is possible you could use one of your smaller cabs with a smaller head. But if you are using a single 8x10 that probably isn't the answer. So what gear do you have now?
